Centuries ago, a group of Monks bind a demon, Moloch the Corrupter, in a book. That book ends up in the Sunnydale library where Giles and Ms. Calendar, the computer science teacher, are arguing about the computer age.
Willow scans the book containing Moloch into the computer.
A week later Willow reveals to Buffy that shes been talking to a guy, Malcolm,
online and that she likes him. Buffy questions Willow and later Xander and
Buffy worry about the dangers of meeting someone online.
When Willow skips some classes she and Buffy argue. Willow calls Malcolm her
boyfriend, although theyve never met. Willow tells Buffy that guys never chase
her and she thought that Buffy would be happy for her.
Buffy asks Dave, a computer student, questions about how to track someone
                                             through their email.
He is eager to help until she mentions Willow, Dave tells her to leave Willow alone.
After telling Giles that she is suspicious aboput Malcolm he suggests she follow Dave.
She follows him to a building but doesnt notice a camera at the building zooming in on her.
Fritz, a friend of Daves, sees Buffy spying, on the video security and when he asks Malcolm/Moloch what to do; Malcolm/Moloch replies he wants her killed.
Dave sets Buffy up to be killed, but he changes his mind and warns her before
she can be electrocuted.
Dave runs and when he refuses to help the Demon kill Buffy, Malcolm/Moloch
writes a computer suicide note for Dave.
Ms. Calendar and Giles argue again about books versus computers and she
remarks that the book she just picked up is blank.
Buffy discovers Daves body when she looks for Willow in the computer lab.
It appears that he has hanged himself!
After Ms. Calendar leaves, Giles, Buffy and Xander discover that Moloch is on the Internet.
When Buffy tries to find out more, Moloch/Malcom warns her away from Willow.
Meanwhile Willow starts to feel uncomfortable talking with Malcolm, when he makes a remark about Buffy being thrown out of her old school. She goes home and finds an email waiting for her from Malcolm.
He wants to meet.
She doesnt answer him and turns off her computer. It turns itself back on.
There is someone at her door, and when she goes to answer it, Fritz knocks her out and brings her to Moloch.
When Buffy and Xander discover her missing they go to the building Buffy had followed Dave to earlier.
At the library Giles asks Ms. Calendar for her help in binding Moloch. He finds out she knows about demons and is a technopagan.
At the building Willow wakes and discovers that Malcolm is Moloch and now has a robot body.
He kills Fritz and tells Willow that he just wants her love.
When she rejects him he prepares to kill her.
Giles and Ms. Calendar complete the ritual and get Moloch out of the Internet. He still has the form of a huge robot though!
Buffy tries to fight Moloch but he is made of steel and her punches and kicks make
                                       little impression.
She taunts him into trying to punch her and when he does, she ducks and he
instead punches into an electrical system, blowing himself into pieces.
At school the next day Xander and Buffy try and cheer Willow up by acknowledging
that they all have had bad luck trying to find a significant other.
