Willow and Xander are feeling bored outside the cemetery. They chat about missing Buffy, who spent the summer with her father in LA. The two talk nonsense , and almost kiss, when suddenly a Vampire stands up behind them. Xander tries to fight with it but Buffy appears and kills the Vampire.
At the Summers residence Buffy's Dad helps Joyce unpack Buffys things. He tells her that Buffy made no difficulties in LA, but seemed 'absent'.
Next day is the first school day back at Sunnydale High.
Giles meets Jenny Calendar and both are obviously glad to see each other. They meet up with Willow, Xander and Buffy, who is strangely cool towards Giles. The three tell of the Vampire in the cemetery.
Jenny is surprised: She thought that with the death of the master and the locking of the hell mouth all Vampires were defeated. But Giles explains that the hell mouth is not powerless and still attracts all kinds of monsters.
Later, Buffy trains with Giles in the Library. She is extremely serious and fights savagely, thinking of the master. At the same time, in an old factory building, a Vampire speaks to a crowd of other Vampires. It reminds them of the fact that the Anointed still lives and that they wil 'raise' the Master from the dead!
In the school Xander and Willow meet up with a thoughtful Buffy, Giles arrives and tells them that he knows what the Vampires intend.
Suddenly, he looks at Buffy and attacks her, trying to kill her, while all the while,
Xander and Willow look on, totaly uninterested.
Buffy succeeds in reaching for  Giles' face - it becomes detached!
It's a rubber mask, and behind it is the face of  the master.
Buffy wakes up: She only dreamed it.
In her bedroom stands Angel, who asks how she is.
Buffy makes it plain that she does not want to discuss private things with him and
                                         she behaves distantly towards him.
Angel warns her about the anointed one, and as he is leaving, tells her, quietly, that he missed her, when Buffy answers that she missed him as well, Angel has already left!
The next morning Joyce drives Buffy to school. She tells Buffy she is concerned about her!
When Buffy tells Willow and Xander about Angels visit, Cordelia arrives and asks the Trio whether they fought Demons over the summer! Buffy and Cordy 'Bitch' at each other, which leaves Xander and Willow slightly taken aback!
The same evening at the bronze Willow and Xander talk about Buffys new personality! Willow tries to remind Xander of the 'almost' kiss outside the cemetery, but he apparently cannot remember.
At the same time some Vampires excavate the skeleton of the master from its grave. The earth burns one of the Vampires hands, but they carry on!
In the Bronze Angel appears and wants to reconcile with Buffy but he is unsuccessful. Buffy goes to Xander and Willow, and asks Xander to dance!. She dances very seductively  with him, while Willow and Angel watch tormented and hurt.
Buffy abruptly leaves Xander on the dance floor after teasing him! She goes outside, where Cordelia has followed her and gives her a piece of advice, basicly saying that Buffy had better get over whatever is bothering her, or she will lose all her friends.
Buffy leaves and does not notice that Cordelia is kidnapped immediately after this, by a group of Vampires. Cordelia is taken into a dark cellar, in which the unconscious Jenny lies.
Meanwhile Buffy goes over to the grave of the master, and she sees that it is empty.
The next day in school Giles, Xander and Willow sit in the Cafeteria. Willow believes that she can explain Buffys behavior of the previous evening only by posession, but Giles thinks that she is still traumatised  by her short death and the fight against the Master.
Buffy arrives and tells them nervously, that the masters grave is empty!. She reproaches  Giles about the fact that he did not protect the bones better, and is convinced that the Master will rise again. Later, the four talk in the library. Giles reads that the blood of the ones 'closest' to the Master is needed to raise him.
While they consider this, a stone flies in through the window, around which a note and Cordelias' bracelet is wound:
Buffy is to come to the Bronze, otherwise Cordelia dies.
Buffy wants to go immediately, alone! Willow draws Buffy's attention to the fact that the message is a trap, but Buffy tells them that she is going alone!
On the way she meets Angel. He wants to help her, Buffy rejects his help, telling him she can't trust a Vampire, and she tries to pick a fight with him
Angel however, follows her to the bronze. The club is empty, in a corner, apparently, cowers Cordelia, but Buffy realises that it is a Vampire. Also, Angel is now sure that the whole thing is a diversion.
Giles, with Xander and Willow in the library, finds a further translation of the ritual for the raising of the Master: For it the people, who were present at his death are needed, that means Giles, Willow, Cordelia and Jenny. It becomes clear it is too late and that the letter was actually a trap, but not for Buffy:
On the parapet of the library several Vampires already stand.
Buffy leaves Angel with the Vampire in the bronze and runs back to the library.
But she comes too late: She finds only an extremely furious Xander, Who makes
it clear to her that he blames Buffy for the trap, and he tells her that if any harm
comes to Willow, he will kill her!.
It is clear that the Vampires now have the complete set of the people they need.
They run together back to bronze, where Buffy tortures the female Vampire, until
she tells them the place of the ritual.
In the factory building, where the ritual is to take place, hang Giles, Willow, Cordelia and Jenny helplessly, upside down, lined up over a table, on which the skeleton of the master is. The Anointed supervises the ritual, which begins straight away, as Buffy, Angel and Xander creep into the building.
Buffy wants to fight the Vampires alone. Angel and Xander go to release the others. Buffy  fights against the Vampires, until Angel helps her and they defeat them!
The fighting ends but Buffy does not look happy.
She uses a sledghehammer to smash the bones of the Master, until she begins
to sob, and falls crying into Angels arms!
Next day at school Buffy is worried about how her friends will react to her, Giles
tries to comfort her, but it is not until she is in class with Xander and Willow, that
she realises her friends still care for her, when Xander makes a joke about
                                           grinding their enemies to dust!
