There are 3 caps you can use to help you beat the game and you need to finish certain levels. To use these you must hit the switch for the cap. Here is how you get these switches.
WING CAP
After about 10 stars, there will be a spotlight on the main floor in the castle. Make Mario walk into this spotlight and press C-Up. Now just fly down and press on the switch.
VANISH CAP
In the basement there is a door that leads to a place where there is some water flooding a door and 2 pillars. Pound on these pillars. The water level will go down and you can go out the door. You are now in the moat with no water. Find the hole in the ground and go down it. Finish this level and stomp on the vanish cap.
METAL CAP
Go into the Hazy Maze and go to the Underground Lake. Jump on the sea monster and stomp on his back. Now you can ride the sea monster to a door that leads to the metal cap switch.
