Miniature horses

A miniature horse in harness with a sulky Miniature horses like those featured at Crystal Creek Miniatures have been around for hundreds of years and graced the grandest royal courts of England and Europe. They were there to amuse the royal children and helped the court jesters in their revelry, especially at festivals.

However, during difficult times of famine and wars in the Middle Ages, the little people fell on hard times - and many horses (both large and small) were eaten. King Henry VIII of England with his great stature did not like things that made him feel large and so ordered the slaughter of all stallions under 14 hands high (56 inches or 140cm). Lovers of miniature horses came to the rescue, hiding their smaller stock from authorities who were intent on destroying the tiny breed.

The gypsies with their exuberant and fiery lifestyle went for the most colourful ones with spots and patches of colour. They featured them in their circuses, as they travelled around, performing tricks extraordinaire!

Palmdale Orion's Star, one of the foals at crystal Creek Miniatures Many of these tiny equines were bred with heavier types and put to work in the mines as 'pit ponies'. Their gentle disposition and patience made them ideal for this heavy work, but it wasn't much of a life! This same friendly nature makes them excellent for children to handle and lead in the show-ring.

Palmdale Stud is one of Australia's premier breeders of miniature horses, with three decades' experience producing some of the country's tiniest and finest horses.

Our careful selection of home-grown stock has been combined with a number of bloodlines imported from America.

Our imported stallions include:
  • Diamond Ds Silver Knight (imp USA), a proud and flashy dark chocolate coloured stallion with a white mane and tail;
  • Hemlock Brooks Golden King (imp USA), a golden palomino;
  • The Midnight Blue Dancer (imp USA), a silver dapple taffy;
  • Log Cabin Farms Casper (imp USA), a snow-white stallion with blue eyes.
Our imported mares include:
  • NFC's On Stage (imp USA), an American chestnut with flaxen mane and tail;
  • Hemlock Brooks Legacy's Powder Puff (imp USA), a friendly little pure white mare with a medicine hat (one chestnut-coloured ear). In America, if she were a full sized horse Powder Puff's highly regarded markings would "earmark" her as the mount of an Indian chief.
Foaling season generally runs from August through to the end of summer, but the large number of breeding horses at Crystal Creek Miniatures ensures babies are still arriving as late as May. One of Powder Puff's progeny, Palmdale Jardine, has a perfect blaze and snow white mane and tail. He is presenting us with wonderfully unusual foals, such as the very rare silver dapple overo Palmdale Orion's Star.

Come along and "meet the minis" on the tractor train tour at Crystal Creek Miniatures. See them, pat them and you will love them!
