| Welcome to the holidays. Happy Thanksgiving and X-mas and etc. etc. The holidays are an interesting if comercialized time. They always (at least for me) start a semi-introspective trend that seems to last untill about New Years when all the resolutions get made. I begin to wonder how my year measures up to previous ones. Was it better or worse? Did I accomplish what I set out to do? Where has the road taken me that I did or could not have forseen, but always did I choose. Plus I turn a year older around Thanksgiving and every year the notion of mortality lurks at the edge of my senses motivating me to make sure that I waste little of the precious life I have. From a metaphysical perspective things are running their course in the world at large, and it would seem that the 'War' on terrorism is largely coming to a conclusion of sorts. I'm not entirely sure what that conclusion is mind you but there it is nonetheless. On the overall it has accomplished a thing or two. The current 'effort' has served to relieve the pressure that had been building for some time in the world, and frankly has been much like the release of energy that occurred along with the Vietnam and Korean and many other relatively minor scurmishes that have beeen played out in the past half a century or so. They serve little purpose on a local scale as the people involved are seldom helped by the chain of events. The only purpose that these things really serve is that they release energy on an overall scale and prevent that big war that everone worries about. While it may be hard to see it in that light and all the more so because this is not the reason that leaders of nations take the actions they take, but rather they function as part of a whole that is hard to see and harder to accept as it cares little for the individual. The Christmas holiday comes near and is filled with the ideas that we as humans, set apart from the animals are the center and purpose of the universe. Sadly that is quite far from the truth. WE are but a part of a whole that functions by the means of laws and ways that exist quite well without our understanding our place in it. At this time it is imperative that we take a moment or two to ascertain our place in the world and realize that we are but small, vulnerable creatures that need our fellow humans to bring us strength. We need to love God and love one another, and since this seems to hold little compulsion for most, myself often included, then perhaps it would be helpful to note that we are all we really have in a very complex and dangerous universe. We can make it, survive it, and overcome it, but only if we all understand that we have a part to play and an obligation to each other. Not for some religion, but for our self-preservation. Take a minute to stop and consider how much stronger those around you, make you. :) Thanks for stopping in. 11/24/01 |
