| We have watched John Truman Carter III grow up in the ER. He is affectionately regarded by his co-workers who have watched him grow from a naive medical student, into a greatly respected leader. He began his career as a surgical intern but disliked the inabilty to spend time with his patients. Thus, he decided that the Cook County General ER was where he truly belonged. He now holds an Attending position in the ER and has become the heart and soul since Mark Greene's death. |

| In later years, a violent attack by a schitzophrenic patient, Paul Sobricki, caused many hardships for Carter. Not only was medical student Lucy Knight killed but, Carter himself was left with two stab wounds in the back from a six inch butcher knife. Carter succumbed to substance abuse after the incident. Supportive co-workers, including Abby Lockhart who first witnessed Carter's abuse problem, helped him seek treatment in "May Day." |

| Carter also began a relationship with Abby in late season 8's "Lockdown." However, fans had long seen the attraction that existed between the two for a couple of years. Unfortunately, family troubles kept both of them very busy. These troubles, as well as a lack of communication ultimately led to their break up in early season 10's "Dear Abby.". |

| Season 10 showed much of Carter's recent work in the Congo, volunteering with Doctors Without Borders. His experiences have inspired him to help others even more. He now splits his time between the Congo and his work at County. Since his Gamma's death he has also been playing a large role in the Carter Family Foundation since Gamma left him in charge of everything. He has taken this opportunity to follow Abby's advice and "change the priorities" of the organization towards a larger focus on medicine, even going so far as to donate Gamma's house to Northwestern for medical use. |

| While in the Congo, Carter met Makemba Likasu, an AIDS healthcare worker. They got together and she found herself pregnant with his child.They returned to America at Carter's urging, wanting the child to be born in the US. Sadly, the baby died two moths premature and stillborn in "Midnight." The baby had inadvertently tied his umbilical cord in a knot, cutting off blood flow. |

| The baby's death caused great turmoil in Carter and Kem's relationship. Kem begins to shut down, avoids Carter's gazes and rarely speaks. Carter wants so desperately to help her through this difficult time. However, he also needs someone to lean on as well. This incident has brought Carter and his father much closer. We can also see how strong his friendships with Luka and Abby really are as they come to his side in a time of need. What is in store for Carter and Kem's relationship?
