Wow!  This stuff is hard, but I love it!  There is just something about playing with expensive machined aluminum reels and carbon fiber rods.  what could be better? Catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself might, so why not do both at the same time?  I just started getting into this, so I don't have too much info, but I hope what I do offer helps somebody (at least a little).  I am currently using a St.Croix Avid 6wt, G.Loomis Nautikos series 8wt and 10wt and for reels a Bauer LM3 and a MX4.  I need an MX5, but I'm broke. :-(   I am intrigued my the engineering that goes into the Bauer reels, it is simply amazing.  They have some really smart engineers working for them.  Let me show you....
Here is an pic inside the clutch assembly:

What those little round things do is make the spool engage the drag in only one direction.  Instantly.  Zero hesitation. Want to switch from a left hand to a right hand retrieve?  Just swap the metal bearings with the little pencil-eraser looking do-dads.   Here is the MX4 completely apart (the clutch is under the cork drag)

Now if that doesn't impress you, then you try designing one better!  I know I will! The disk is cork and it is pushed against a delrin/teflon drag plate seen in the center of the spool.  Pretty cool sealed ball bearings too.  A tiny little spring makes a very quiet click-click when the line goes out.  I hate those reels you can hear a mile away.  I think the fish hate them too!

Okay, I don't know that much about fly fishing, but I'm learning.  So let me point you to a couple of great web sites:
