Communicator #7 (p. 179): Newspaper/Radio/TV Stations Newspaper – Tour the Patriot News building at 812 Market St. Harrisburg. Call 975-9776, Tues, Weds., Thurs, until 6:30 – 7:00 pm with one months notice. No one under 9 years old allowed. The tour lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes. Radio – Tour the Dame Media building at 600 Corporate Circle, Harrisburg. Call 540-8800, ext. 293, with one weeks notice. The tour lasts 30 minutes. Radio stations include Bob 94.9 WRBT, WHP 580, The River 97.3 WRVV, WKBO 1230 and Kool 94.3 FM/1460 AM WWKL. For directions take Rt. 81 North to Exit 24 Progress Ave. At the split, take a left. At the light, take a left and go under Rt. 81 overpass. At the next light, take a right onto Nationwide Drive. At the first road, make a left onto Corporate Circle and follow to the back. A Red Roof Inn will be on the left. The radio station is salmon colored behind the Red Roof Inn. Tour WINK 104 at 3400 N. 6th Street, Harrisburg. Call the Programming Director at 238-1041. The tour last 30 to 45 minutes. WINK 104 prefers to give tours at the beginning of the week (Monday or Tuesday), from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and prefer ages 10 to 15 years old. Tour WWII 720 AM at 8 W. Main Street, Shiremanstown. Call to schedule a tour at 731-9944. Tours are given anytime until 7 PM. Television – Tour WITF at 1982 Locust Lane, Harrisburg. Call 236-6000, ext. 2945 or 221-2945, to talk to someone in Communications. The tour lasts 45 minutes. Tour the television studio, control room and the radio station if you want. Tours are given on Monday to Friday during the day and the last tour is at 6:30 PM. Directions or a map can either be mailed or faxed. WITF is located near the Colonial Park Mall/Progress Avenue. Tour UPN 15, Channel 21 WHP, WLYH at 3300 N. 6th Street, Harrisburg. Call 238-2100, ext. 220 for more details. Tours last 30 to 45 minutes. Tour the newsroom, studio, master control room, etc.. Tours are given during business hours before 5:00 PM. Tour WGAL TV at 333 Market St., Harrisburg, Pa. Call 238-8888 for more details. Tours last 20 to 30 minutes. Tour the daily live section, with an option to be in the audience, on Tuesday and Wednesday, from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM. After the live section, the tour starts at 1:00 PM. Children must be 12 years old or older.
Craftsman (p. 253): Woodworking - A local woodworker in Mechanicsburg, provides wood shop equipment at his home for Webelos scout projects. He will provide the materials at a nominal charge of $2 per scout. He will complete 4 wood projects, meeting twice and lasting 1 and a half hours per meeting in his basement workshop. Den Leaders should provide extra adults, cordless drills and safety goggles. He will also work with the wolf and bear scouts. Please contact the Cubmaster to obtain the woodworkers telephone number. Home Depot - The Kids Workshop is held on Sunday afternoons and usually at the end of the month. Call 795-9602 for more information.
Wildlife Conservation (Achievement 5CDE) p. 47; Forester (Achievement #3, 4) p. 329; Naturalist (Achievement #3,5,6,7) p. 371: Wildwood Lake Sanctuary - With more than 200 acres to enjoy, a great place for biking, or hiking on six miles of trails. Wildwood Way trail is 3.1 miles long and traverses a variety of habitats such as wetlands, forest, meadow and stream. Wildwood Lake is located behind Harrisburg Area Community along Industrial Road. The trail entrance is located at the north end of the Sanctuary. The Benjamin Olewine III Nature Center opened in December 1999. Call 599-5188 for more details. Pinchot Park - During the summer, a variety of programs are offered, day and evening. Call 432-5011 for more details. The park is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Programs for scout dens will be arranged during these hours. Scout Day is usually held on a Saturday in October. Call the park for more information. Kings Gap - Scout Day is usually held on a Saturday in October and also a Saturday in April. Environmental education specialists can set up individual programs for dens during the week and weekends. Call 486-5031 for more details. Little Buffalo - Scout Day is usually held on a Saturday in September. Other programs can be set up for a den on request. Geologist (p. 349): Lincoln Caverns (www.lincolncaverns.com/scout.htm) - The tour is a 6 hour Webelos Geologist program and is offered in the spring. Groups can stay overnight. The cost is expensive. Indian Echo Caverns (www.indianechocaverns.com) - Tour Indian Echo Caverns, located in Hershey, Pa. With a mailing address at P.O. Box 188, Hummelstown, Pa. Call 566-8131 for details. The tour offers a Webelos Geologist program typically in May, June, September and October. The three hour program includes a cavern tour, land surface tour, panning for gemstones and a rock & mineral workshop. The cost is $13 per scout, $6 per adult (and an additional $4.50 if an adult pans for gem stones.) Dauphin County Recreation Board - They had a fossil program in the past at Fort Hunter and usually in the Fall. Call 599-5188 for more information. Outdoorsman, Craftsman, Engineer, Forester, Geologist, Naturalist, Scientist (Webelos II only) (p. 395) Overnight Campout: Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts ([email protected]) - Whitaker Center has offered specific scout-oriented programs in the past. For the 2002-2003 year, they are revamping the program, so camp-ins are temporarily unavailable. They expect to have new opportunities and brochures available in June 2003.
