Tiger Cub Achievement Ideas:

1. Making My Family Special

Family:  Think of one chore you can do with your adult partner.  Complete it together.

Den:  Make a family scrapbook.

Go See It:  Learn about family life years ago by going to a library, historical society, museum, old farm, historical building or visit older person.

Tour the Mechanicsburg Museum Association library and museum.  Call 732-3821 or visit their website for more details.  The association (697-6088) also offers an historical tour of Mechanicsburg (a different tour than the tour made by fourth graders).


2. Where I Live

Family:  Look at a map of your community with your adult partner.

Den:  Practice the Pledge of Allegiance and participate in a den or pack flag ceremony.

Go See It:  Visit a police station or fire station.


Call the Upper Allen Police Department (795-2445) or visit their website or call Upper Allen Fire Department (697-9595) or visit their website to schedule a tour.


3. Keeping Myself Healthy and Safe

Family:  Practice a fire drill.  Discuss what to do if you become lost.

Den:  Make a food guide pyramid.

Go See It:  Learn the rules of game or sport then go to an amateur or professional game or sporting event.


The Pack usually goes to a Harrisburg Heat or a Hershey Bears game in the spring.

4. How I Tell It

Family:  Tell something about your day at the dinner table.

Den:  Play tell it like it isn’t.

Go See It:  Visit a TV station, radio station or newspaper office.

Newspaper - Sentinel - Tour this news company at 457 E. North Street, Carlisle.  Call 697-4611 or 240-7103 for more details.  It is best to visit when the presses are running at 10:30 AM.  (website)

Radio – Tour the Dame Media building at 600 Corporate Circle, Harrisburg.  Call 540-8800, ext. 293, with one weeks notice.  The tour lasts 30 minutes.

Radio - Tour WWII 720 AM at 8 W. Main Street, Shiremanstown.  Call to schedule a tour at 731-9944.

Television – Tour WITF at 1982 Locust Lane, Harrisburg.  Call 236-6000, ext. 2945 or 221-2945, to talk to someone in Communications.  Tour the television studio, control room and the radio station if you want.  (website)

5. Let’s Go Outdoors

Family:  Go outside and watch the weather.

Den:  Make a leaf rubbing with crayon or colored pencil.

Go See It:  Take a hike with den.


Environmental Center, next to Upper Allen School, entrance on S. York Street.  Contact the Mechanicsburg School District office for details and permission.

The Messiah College campus has some beautiful hiking trails. A good starting point is to cross the covered bridge and pick up the trail next to the Yellow Breeches. Cross the swinging bridge and turn right. The trail has several exercise stops along the way.

Pinchot Park - The park is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  Special programs for scout dens can be arranged.  Call 432-5011 for more information.  (website)

Kings Gap - Environmental education specialists can set up individual programs for dens during the week or weekends.  Call 486-5031 for more details.  (website)

Wildwood Lake Sanctuary - is located behind Harrisburg Area Community along Industrial Road.  The Benjamin Olewine III Nature Center opened in December 1999.  Call 599-5188 for more details.  They will also hold Scout workshops.  Bring at least 10 scouts to a scheduled show and have a private one hour workshop after the performance.  The price is $10 per scout.  Call 238-4111 for more information.  (website)
