When a hatchling is ready to emerge from the egg, it will slit the eggshell with a microscopic eggtooth. The eggtooth falls off after the neonate emerges from its shell. It will pip its head and stay in the same position for several hours before totally emerging out of the egg.
Typical hatchling sizes are between 6.5 to 7.6 cm (2.5 to 3.0 inches) total length and 3.4 to 4.0 cm (1.3 to 1.5 inches) SVL. Weights range from 1.2 to 1.8 grams
Hatchlings are best housed individually in small "critter keepers," plastic square containers, half to one gallon plastic jars, screen cages or glass vivariums. Whatever enclosure you choose, it should be small enough to make catching insect preys manageable for hatchlings. Appropriate furniture such as dry branches and moss should be added.
The bottom of an enclosure can be lined with moss or paper towel. Constant wet conditions can result in respiratory problems and can have a fatal result if not caught and addressed in a timely manner. Temperature extremes should be avoided. Moderate temperature between 20.0-24.4C (68-76F) is ideal for the first few weeks.
Hatchlings will start eating 2 to 3 days after hatching. Offer 3 to 5 one week old crickets per feeding. Dust feeder insects with calcium supplements at every feeding.
