There are three definitions of the word 'spell' to be found. The first is associated with the Gothic word 'spill' meaning a story, narrative, saying or item of news. Another is Anglo-Saxon in nature, 'spellian', meaning to recount, to spell or write out. An old English word, 'speld' which was used to describe a thin rod of wood used to point to things on a blackboard, also known as a wand.

Essentially, a spell is the focusing of the mind to help achieve a purpose. Notice that I said 'help' not make. Spells are not a means to change anything, only speed events on their way. If you wish to curse someone, then please seek knowledge elsewhere, as you will find nothing here. Some people believe in the three-fold law, that which you send out will come back to you times three. Personally I have not experienced this, I have however done something nice for someone and had something good back in return, and the same for bad. Myself, I believe that if you send out bad energy to someone who does not deserve it, you will be the one who suffers because of it.

The popular saying, "Be careful what you wish for, it might come true" should also be kept in mind. Concentrating on what you wish to achieve plays a major part in spell casting. Your intentions must be clear, consistant and with the intent of harming none.

To aid concentration, Witches will often use images, words and objects while casting a spell, items such as a red candle to help you to focus on what it is you wish to achieve. Incantations also help you to focus, if they are kept simple, making them longer than four lines may make it difficult to remember the entire incantation.

To cast a successful spell, it is not enough just to want something to happen, you must believe that it will happen and that you can personally make it happen. There is no point casting a spell to find a job if you do not call for an interview!

Another word of caution, if you are considering a healing spell, you must make sure that the person you desire to heal is ready to be healed. It sounds strange, but that sprained ankle might just be what stops your best friend from walking out in front of a bus. To cast a healing spell you must have the permission of the sick or injured party to cast that spell on them, they must truely want to be healed and be done with the symptoms they have been experiencing. Who would want to be sick? No one really, however it might be that illness which gives that person the attention they have been yearning for, or the rest that they so badly needed.

My last point, always say thank you if your spell is successful, there are a number of ways of doing this, you can simply say thank you, or offer something to the Lord and Lady, maybe scatter some seeds for the local wildlife, or plant a tree. Always keep in mind that spells or magick is not always instant, remain positive and know that if your intentions are pure, what you have asked for will come to you when it is safe to do so.

Do NOT attempt to perform a spell, magick or any form of Witchcraft if you:

Work outside the protection of a well-cast Circle
Feel anger or resentment towards a particular person
Are in an altered state of consciousness as a result of drugs or alcohol or
Feel confused about what you are doing.
