There are four elements, Air, Fire, Earth and Water. Each of the four elements has a corresponding direction, North, South, East and West. Depending on the hemisphere you reside in will depend on which cardinal direction each element will correspond to.
Traditionally, North is Earth, South Fire, East Air and West Water, however being an Australian myself I find it difficult to call upon the element of Earth when looking to the North where the Sun is for most of the day. Some swap North for Fire and South for Earth (Antarctica being cool and dark, much like soil) and leave East as Air and West as Water. I live on the Eastern side of Australia, Water is closest to my West, but that is only a bay, the entire Pacific Ocean is to my East! Besides, the winds always come from the West. It is up to each individual, as with almost everything in magick, do what feels right to you.
The elements also have corresponding ritual tools, the pentacle for Earth, the athame for Air, wand for Fire and chalice or cauldron for Water. Some disagree with the wand representing Fire, and believe it better represents Air, I was one of those people, until I thought about all those fairy tale picture books I had, the 'Fairy Godmother' or 'Good Witch' always had a spark at the end of her wand. If you don't like the wand for the element of Fire, simply swap it with a candle instead.
Linked also to yourself, the elements tie into your intellect (air), will (fire), emotions (water) and your body (earth). If you find imbalance in your lifestyle or psychic, attempt to discover which particular element is weak within yourself and work towards creating a balance, if it is your will that is weak, use images of fire, or burn candles while meditating to strengthen your resolve. This will not only benefit all aspects of your life, but your spells as well.
