Candles have been used as a part of religious ceremonies for a very long time. Fire has been used to symbolise the divine life-force that is within all of us, illuminating the darkness of the soul which leads it forward on a path to spiritual enlightenment.

One of the most simple rituals to perform is that of candle magick. Candles are used by Witches as they create a peaceful meditation aid, focus thought and still the mind, not to mention representing the element of fire. Some Witches mark their candles with speical symbols and runes, although this is not essential to candle magick. It is important to use new candles for each ritual, you should not re-light a previously used candle because they will hold a different type of energy. However, candles used in ritual should always be allowed to burn down, keeping that in mind, don't use a foot long candle if you are leaving the house right after you complete the ritual.

Always ensure that your candles are in a safe place when left to burn down, and that they are secure so they do not fall over. Be mindful where you place your candles, you do not want a fresh breeze to come through your room in the middle of a ritual and extinguish the flame. Once a candle is alight, it should not be touched, it needs to be left to burn in its own time. Candles should also be lit with matches, or from another candle, not a lighter, wood is a natural element, where as the pollutants in a lighter are not.

When using candles in your ritual magick, look deep into the flame and visualize your wish, if a part of your ritual is to blow out the flame, imagine the rising smoke climbing upwards is carrying your wish to the Powers That Be so that it might come to manifest.
