Pronounced 'IM-bolc' and otherwise known as Candlemas, this is the half way point between Midwinter and the Spring Equinox, a time to celebrate the purity and innocence of the virgin maiden. Traditionally, this festival is the time when candles were made for the coming year, symbolising the light coming out of darkness.
This is also a time to state your goals for the year and complete fertility rituals or dances for the crops, livestock and yourself.
Imbolc has long been considered a VERY appropriate time for initiation, transformation, new beginnings and rebirth. Particularly sacred to women and the Goddess of inspiration and healing, Brigid.
The word Imbolc actually means 'in the belly' and is a time of cleansing and purification, the darkness has ended and growth has been reaffirmed.
The days have been lengthening since Yule, however this is the first notification of spring.
Celebrated on February 2 in the Northen Hemisphere and August 1 in the Southern is this holiday.
Colours associated with Imbolc are white and red.
