Personality

The Big 5 (also known as The Five Factor Model of Personality) is based on the idea that personality can be described and measured on five broad dimensions: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. The theory is also known as OCEAN -- made of the first letters of the five traits. Many personality researchers have contributed to the Big 5 model, including Allport and Odbert's, Webb, Garnett, Goldberg, Costa and McCrae.

Openness to Experience / Intellect:

- High on Openness: Imaginative, curious, creative, adventurous, original, artistic.
- Low on Openness: Conventional, avoiding the unfamiliar, unartistic, lack of imagination.

Conscientiousness:

- High on Conscientiousness: Caution, disciplined, organized, neat, ambitious and goal-oriented, high on need for structure.
- Low on Conscientiousness: Unreliable, lazy, careless, negligent, low on need for achievement.

Extraversion:

- High on Extraversion: Talkative, optimistic, sociable, friendly, high in need for stimulation.
- Low on Extraversion: Unartistic, quite, conventional, less assertive, aloof.

Agreeableness:

- High on Agreeableness: Compassionate, good-natured, trusting, helpful
- Low on Agreeableness: Irritable, rude, uncooperative, unsympathetic.

Neuroticism / Emotional Stability:

- High on Neuroticism: Anxious, nervous, worrying, insecure, emotional, excessive carvings or urges, unrealistic ideas
- Low on Neuroticism: Relaxed, calm, secure, unemotional, even-tempered

Personality Development

Personality development along these dimensions is observed through out a person's life span. According to "Development of Personality in Early and Middle Adulthood: Set Like Plaster or Persistent Change?" (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Vol. 84, No. 5) by Sanjay Srivastava, Ph.D., and Oliver P. John, Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley; Samuel D. Gosling, Ph.D., University of Texas, Austin; Jeff Potter, B.A., Cambridge, MA, openness decreases as both men and women age; conscientiousness increases with age, with the biggest increases in a person's 20s; extraversion is higher among women than men when both are young, but declines only for women as they age; agreeableness increases the most during a person's 30s; neuroticism is higher among women than men when both are young, but declines only for women as they age.

All five of the dimensions are present in every human being, but the proportions differ from person to person. I can say that I have a high score at Openness and Extraversion. It's interesting to look at my CV and to check if that can be derived from the activities. It should represent my personality.
