I have a 56k modem but cannot connect at that speed. Why?
Several things to try here:
-
From the AOL sign on screen, click Setup, Modem, then be sure
the correct modem is selected.
-
Now
click on Setup, Edit Location, and select the maximum speed
possible.
-
Go
to Keyword ACCESS and be sure you are using a 56k phone number...and
that you are only using a x2 number if you have a x2 modem,
and a number capable of handling V90 if that is your type.
-
Go
to Keyword MODEM HELP and download the AOL Diagnostic Tool.
Installing this tool will upgrade the AOL Setup with the latest
modem profiles. Then go back into your modem setup and try different
ones.
-
In
Windows, Go to Start/ Settings/ Control Panel/Modems. Highlight
your modem then click on the Properties, General, Modem Speed
and select the maximum speed setting. (probably 115000).
-
Go
to Keyword X2, V90, or K56FLEX (depending on your modem) for
a wealth of information on this subject including special drivers,
modem strings, line tests, etc.
-
Your
phone line might be too old or damaged to allow a faster speed.
Replace phone cords, and call the phone company regarding any
known problems in your area.
-
Remember
that the max speed allowed by the FCC is 53Kbps.
