THE ROUTE 66 MOTORING ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME

ROUTE 66 - linking mountain and plain, desert and forest, cornfield and open range, metropolis and hamlet across 2500 miles of the Great Republic.

It was 1926. Henry Ford had put the nation on wheels, and Cy Avery in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was celebrating his success on persuading Congress to push the first all-weather transcontinental highway through to California via his home town. Route 66 was born just as the Dust Bowl took hold in the mid-west; it was there for the fleeing "Okies", and it was there for millions of dispossessed who dreamt of escape to the Golden West during the Great Depression. John Steinbeck in "Grapes of Wrath" christened 66 "The Mother Road" and ever since it has guided the restless and the visionary to California's dream factory - orange groves, vineyards and Hollywood.

This journey is not about destinations. Being "On the Road" has its own momentum. You will quickly discover that Route 66 is not so much a road, as a community. You will be welcomed, entertained and educated by the characters for whom 66 is a way of life. Just try getting away from Bob at the Riviera Bar in Gardner, Illinois without hearing his eyewitness stories of Al Capone and the flood!

Every mile brings new discoveries, irresistible photo opportunities, roadside eating temptations, fascinating 50s and 60s icons, incredible natural wonders and, above all, friendly folks. Our low daily mileage targets are set with an eye to your need to explore and linger.

We keep you off the Interstate Highways, travelling instead along the original alignments of Old 66. This is the only way to recapture the spirit of the American Century. Spot something interesting? Just pull over, get out, and take a closer look. Do that on the Interstate and you'll end up arrested - or dead. There is so little traffic on the old road, you can cruise all day well away from the big rigs and speeding pick-ups.

Our Route 66 formula:

You will have our incomparable Road Book as your companion and guide. We are confident that this is in the most detailed, the most user-friendly and the most carefully checked route-book ever compiled for America's Main Street. It simply cannot be compared with any commercially available guide. Every turning, traffic light and stop sign is plotted, including options for the more intrepid.

Your tour director is on hand throughout the tour to answer questions, sort out problems and provide advice. The support crew brings up the rear to sweep the course and sort out any mechanical mishaps. If you are immobilised anywhere at any time along the route, you will be rescued! Vehicles will either be repaired at the roadside by our own mechanics, or recovered by transporter.
