The Monster was an early attempt at high performance experimentation by SAAB engineers in the 50s. Essentially, this beast is a Model 93B with two 748 cc engines grafted together and mated to a three-speed transmission. The car was also stripped of any unnecessary weight, and the metal hood was replaced by a plastic one to further reduce vehicle weight. The car developed well over 100 bhp, and was clocked at 196 km/h at the Satenas airfield. That was a new world speed record at the time, but unfortunately, it was set under the wrong conditions in that there were no inspectors, and the run was only made in one direction. The Monster was also driven round the Gellersen circuit in Karlskoga, and handling was found to be quite a challenge! As is typical of Saabs of almost all generations, the power developed by the engine ultimately proved to be too much for the transmission, and the vehicle was retired. It now resides in the Saab Museum in Trollhattan, and was recently wheeled out and fired up at the 2001 Festival amidst fascinated (and perhaps bewildered) stares of the gathered attendees.
