Author’s Note:Sorry for all the Typo errors in the last chapter, there might be a lot in here too, I haven’t had any sleep in almost 2 days. Oh! And I plan to post a new chapter for ‘One Messed Up World’ next week!Um, yea that’s all I really gotta say for now. Enjoy!
Chelsea-I really don’t plan on killing Samantha. But some things may occur, can’t say too much ‘cause then no one would read it.
I’m going to start with the last 2 lines from the last chapter.
“ ‘Hello? Dean Buckley’…
‘Yes, it’s Susan Leeway’…
‘I don’t know if this is asking too much, but the Ducks have a lucky charm, it’s one of the player’s younger sisters. And I was thinking, since Eden Hall is so far from their house in St. Paul that…’…
‘Yes, I understand, but I have a teaching defree, and I can get the books from a local school. And she seems really sweet, the quiet type. All she would need is a place to stay.’…
‘So, if she does that, she’s in?’…
‘Thatis great! I’ll let them know right away!’ ”
*
Susan Leeway walked over to Coach Bombay and explained that if Samantha passes a test, she would be able to go to Eden Hall, free of charge, with the Ducks, and she would be her teacher.
Then she walked back over to the Ducks. Guy was with them now. Samantha had put on her skates and was taking shots at the goal.
“Hello Guy. I’m Susan Leeway.”
“Hi.”
“Well I have to go, but I’ll be back soon. Bye Ducks. It was nice to meet you all.”
“Bye” The Ducks said in unison.
As Susan Leeway was walking away Bombay was walking toward the Ducks. They shook hands and Gordan continues to walk toward the Ducks.
“Congradulations, Ducks!”
“Thanks Coach.” They all mumbled.
“What’s wrong with you guys? Why aren’t you happy?”
They all just shrugged then looked over at Samantha.
“Oh,I see.Well I’ve got some extrodinary news!”
The Ducks looked up.
“Susan Leeway has a teaching degree.”Bombay started.
The Ducks just stared at him. “Yea,and so does my mom!” Averman blurted out.
Gordan glared at Averman. “Anyways, she talked to Dean Buckley and he has agreed to let her teach Samantha and let her stay at Eden Hall!”
The started to smile and cheer until Adam cut in, “Why do I feel a but coming?”
“Well, she only gets in, if she passes a test.”
There were a few groans. Samantah wasn’t dumb or anything, but she sometimes had trouble understanding concepts, especially in math.
“Guy why don’t you go tell her.” Bombay instructed.
Guy nodded and skated over to her, with a smile. All the Ducks were staring. “Hey.” He started.
“Hi.”
“I’ve got really good news.” He smiled.
“What is it?” Samantha looked confused.
“You’ve been offered to come to Eden Hall with us!”
Samantha just stared at him. It took her a minute to process what her brother had just said. “What do you mean?” she asked in utter confusion.
“Well the scout that was here has a teaching degree. Jesse and Connie explained to here how close we are,how close we all are. I guess she thought it was special or something. She offered to be your teacher and you could stay at Eden Hall, Dean Buckley agreed to it,…but you have to pass a test.”
“Oh.” Samantha said and looked down at her skates.
“You’re not happy?”
“I am. But I’m not very smart, Guy, you know that. The chances that I pass are one in a million. Why get my hopes up something that will never happen?” Samantha shrugged.
Guy sighed. His sister was normally right. And if she didn’t get in,she’d probably get depressed, and it scared Guy when she got depressed. She won’t eat, sleep, or even leave her room let alone the house, and it could last for days.(story in later chapter,I promise.) “Don’t say that.”he reassured her. “I’ll help you get ready. Don’e you wanna come to Eden Hall?”
Samantha nodded, hugged her brother, and started to skate off.
“Where are you going?”he shouted.
“Gotta thanks the Ducks!”she laughed.
Guy smiled and skated behind her. The Ducks were now in their own conversations. Samantha skated bahin Connie, tapped her on the back, and asked her to come down to her level.
“Yea?” Connie asked.
Samantah threw her arms around Connie’s neck and whispered, “Thanks.”
Connie smiled. “No problem.”
Then samantha skated over to Jesse and did the same thing.
Only he replied, “I told you I’d do anything for my home girl.”
Samantha laughed. Then she thanked all the Ducks as a group. Then they got their gear together and went to get something to eat.
*
The next couple of weeks were hectic. Samantha’s test was in March and she learned about it in January.
Samantha was studying almost 24/7, with the Ducks help, when they weren’t at practice, staying in shape for Eden Hall.
The Ducks divided into groups to help Samantha study.
Math-Julie, Ken, and Adam
History-Charlie, Connie, Luis
Reading-Dwayne, Russ
English-Guy, Averman, Jesse
Science-Fulton, Goldberg, Portman
Math was probalby the hardest and Reading the easiest.
Guy’s mother had agreed to let Samantha go. She even went to Samantha’s current school and got worksheets and textbooks(which they returned) to help her study.
The Ducks job wasn’t very hard. Dwayne and Russ probably had it the easiest. They assigned Samantha a book to rea, she’d write a summary for the chapters, do a worksheet, and at the end of the book she’d take a test. English, History, and Science weren’t too bad either. She seemed interested in the 3 subjects, especially English. She had textbooks for all 3 subjects, and Math,. So normally they’d read a part, she’d do some type of worksheet or quiz to show she understood it, and at the end of each chapter she took a test. Math was the hardest. They all knew there was going to be a big part for Math, there always were on those sort of test. But, Julie, Ken, and Adam did a good job helping her understand each concept. They spent extra time with her on it, especially Adam. He and Guy had become best friends now. Samantha was like his younger sister, they were really close.
*
The test day came. Two days before she had a big study session. She stayed up about a full 24 hours, studying. Then the day before the test she just relaxed. She still studied obviously, but instead of sitting at a table, on the edge of her seat, biting a pen, she was just either laying on the couch or in her room reading note cards. She got to sleep early, her test was at 9.
She got up at six, they were leaving at 8. The Ducks had promise to be at Adam’s house, where she was taking the test, while she took the test. They would’ve taken it at the Germaine house but it’s too small for approximitely 20 people to be waiting, without them being in the next room, or making too much noise. So Adam offered his house.
To Samantha’s surprised all the Ducks were sitting at the table,at 6 in the morning. She was still in her pajamas,a blue-hoodie that said ‘Old Navy’ across the front and blue-plaid flannel pajama pants, her shoulder-length dirty blonde hair pulled up in a messy bun and her deep hazel eyes half opened. And there were the Ducks, even her brother, dressed at 6 in the morning, eating breakfast, smiling. They had already got out her breakfat: half of a grapefruit and a cup of Green Tea, her normal break fast.
She sat down and smiled. “It’s way too early for you guys to be up, not to mention dressed.” She yawned.
“That justs shows how much I love you.” Portman laughed.
The Ducks laughed and Samantha started to eat and review her notes cards.
“Nervous?”Julie asked.
“Yea.” Samantha nodded.
“You’ll do fine.” Adam reassured her, still not quite certain why he was there when the test was at his house. But it was for Samantha so he supposed it couldn’t hurt.
“Well of course I will. I had great teachers!”Samantha smiled.
“Well, duh!” Averman rolled his eyes.
“And thanks to Luis, you’ll never think of History the same way again.” Charlie laughed, putting the rest of his poptart in his mouth.
“Yea, I don’t think I’ll ever think of any of these subjects the same way again.” Samantha laughed and looked at Portman.
“What?!?”
“I don’t think the term ‘doing-it’ was in the textbook.”she laughed.
Portman blushed slightly and joined the rest of the laughing Ducks.
Just then Claire Germaine walked into the kitchen. “Morning kids.”
A variety of, ‘Hey Ms.Germaine’ , ‘Hey, Guy’s mom’, and ‘Morning mom.’ Could be slighty heard.
They all talked a bit, randomly throwing questions at Samantah.
Then at 7 she picked up her dish, “Well I should go get ready.”
The Ducks nodded.
*
By 7:30 she was ready. Her hair up in a pony-tail. She was wearing flared Khakis and her first Ducks jersey for good luck.
She walked into the living room reading note cards and plopped herself next to Adam on the couch, The Ducks were all in random conversations, they didn’t even notice her walk in.
She was reading note cards about Ancient Egypt when her mom called from the kitchen. “Samantha, could you come here?”
“Yea.” She put her note cards on an end table and walked to the kitchen.
“I’m really sorry I can’t come today.”
“It’s alright, mom. I know if you could, you would ocme.”
Claire Germaine nodded. “I wanted to Good Luck before I left, I have a gift for you.”
She handed Samantha 2 boxes. Samantah opened the bigger one first. There were 4 frames. One with a picture of the District 5 team, one with Team USA, one with herself(Samantha) and Guy, and another one of her mom.
“Those are for when you go off to Eden Hall, I know you’re going to pass that test.” Claire said bringing a smile to Samantha’s face.
The next box was a lot smaller. Samantah opened it, carefully. It was a ‘new logo of the duck’ pendant on a silver necklace chain.
“All the parents raised money to get one for all the USA Ducks, so you all will never be alone. Everyone else has their’s already. Your initials are engraved on the back,so you guys never mix yours up.”
And there they were, S.L.G, Samantha Lynn Germaine.
“Wow, Mom.” Tears were forming in Samantha’s eyes. “These are great!” she hugged her Mom.
“I know. And I hate to cut this short but we should all get going.” Ms. Germaine smiled and gave her daughter a quick kiss. “Good Luck, I love you.”
“Love you too, Mom.” Samantha said as her mom said bye to the Ducks and left for work.
She put on the necklace as she walked into the living room.
“Ready?”Adam asked.
“No, I don’t think I ever will.”
Guy laughed. “Well you gotta be ready, lets go.”
“Alright.” Samantha grabbed her note cards and follow the Ducks outside.
The Ducks piled into 4 cars and drove to Adam’s house. Coach Bombay was already there, it was 8:45, Susan Leeway would be there within 15 minutes.
The Ducks,Samantha(I know I call her a Duck, but some people might have not understood),and their Coach went into Adam’s living room. They gave there final ‘Good Lucks’, and reviewed somethings.
Finally, Ms.Leeway got there. “Hi, Samantha. I’m Ms.Leeway. Are you ready?”
Samantah nodded and looked back at the Ducks, a few nodded, a few smiled, and a few mouthed ‘Good Luck’ and ‘You can do it’. She took a deep breath and Adam showed them to the Dining Room.
“Good luck.” Adam smiled and closed the door.
“Thanks.” Samantha mumbled.
Ms.Leeway gave the instructions. She had 5 hours and 15 minutes. The people who made the test thought on average it would take 1 hour per test(one for each subject)but as soon as you finished one test, you could move right onto the next, and so on until you finished all 5 test. There was a 15 minute optional checking period at the end, making a total of 5 hours and 15 minutes to complete the tests. Then Ms.Leeway left, she wasn’t allowed to help Samantha in any way.
While Samantha took the test the Ducks played hockey in Adam’s driveway and watched TV.
Gordan, Ms.Leeway, and Adam’s parents drank coffee and talked in the living room.
When they approached the last 15 minutes Samantha was still in the Dining Room. Coach Bombay had went to get the Ducks so they could be there when she came out.
Ms.Leeway had gone to get Samantha when the 15 minutes were up. Samantha was sitting there checking her answers.
“Alright, times up. You can go back to the living room.”
“Okay.”
*
“How’d you do?” Ken asked.
“Alright, I guess.” Samantha shrugged, then yawned, that was a tiring 5 hours.
“Okay, lets go get something to eat!” Portman yelled, already getting up to go to the cars.
“Portman!”The Ducks laughed.
Samantha shook her head and laughed. “It’s okay guy, lets go.”
As the Ducks started to file out Samantah waited for Guy who was talking to Adam.
“Was it hard?”Adam asked.
“Yea,really hard.” Samantha nodded.
“I’m sure you did fine, you worked really hard for this.” Guy said.
Samantha just sorta shrugged.
They walked down the long hall in silence.
“Hey Adam?”Samantha said getting the boy behind her attention.
“Yea?”
“What’s does congruent mean?”Samantha asked and stopped.
“It means exactly equal in shape and size.”
Samantha took a deep breath, closed her eyes and smiled. ‘I did it.’ She thought to herself.
