It had been about a week since the JV/ Varsity showdown. Varsity and JV still weren’t getting along so Coach Orian and Coach Wilson decided to do something about it. They planned for the two teams to have practice together.

“You guys will be here until you learn to work together!” Wilson yelled.

“But we’re not a team!” Rick complained.

“You belong to the same school, you are going to get along. We’ll keep you here all night if you have to!” Orian yelled.

Samantha giggled a little from her spot up in the bleachers. She could just imagine the things some of the Ducks were thinking.

About 3 hours went by and Wilson took Orian to the side. He whispered something to Orian and they both left.

There was silence for a good 15 minutes then a voice came over the intercom. “You’re going to have to learn how to work together, or else, you’re not leaving. All the doors are locked, the lights will be going out at 7, which is in 5 minutes, for the night, and all you have is whatever is in the stadium and rink. That includes the snack bar and locker rooms, and anything else that isn’t locked. We’ll be back in the morning to check on you, so either way you’re spending the night. So, I hope you start getting along soon or it’s going to be a very long night, and the sooner you get along the sooner you get out of here. Have fun, and no killing each other.” Coach Wilson said.

“Ohhh.” Both hockey teams gave a groan.

Click. The lights went out.

“Well isn’t this just peachy.” Averman complained.

Sneeze.

“God bless you.” Goldberg yelled.

“Thanks!” Samantha yelled back.

“Who’s that?” Cole asked.

“My sister.” Guy shrugged.

“Why is she here?”

“ ‘Cause she always comes to our practices.” Luis gave Cole a ‘duh’ look, but he really couldn’t see because it was too dark.

“Come down here. I don’t want to lose you…although you can’t go very far.” Guy said.

“Okay.” Samantha said as she started limping down the stairs leading to the ice.Normally she would take her crutches, but she didn’t like using them when going down stairs.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Boom. Bang. Swish.

“Ow.” Samantha groaned.

“What did you do?” Charlie asked.

“Fell down the stairs, then I hit the door leading to the ice and it opened.”

“Well, where are you now?Are you okay?” Guy asked.

“Here…somewhere. I don’t really know. But I’m fine.”Samantha said lying on the ice.

“Well that narrows it down.”Rick remarked.

“Well what is she supposed to say? On a cold surface?”Jesse glared.

Rick just grunted.

“Well guys, just skate around slowly until you see her.” Charlie said.

“Why can’t she just stand up?” Cole asked, dumbly.

“She sort of broke her ankle, genius.” Scooter said, annoyed, Varsity could be so dumb sometimes.

“Watch it.” Rick warned.

Scooter just rolled his eyes.

“Whoa!” Bang. “Ow.”

“Ow, get off of me!”Samantha yelled.

“Sorry ‘bout that.” Luis said as he got up.

“It’s okay.”

“Found her! We’re by the door that leads to the ice on the left side.” Luis called and Guy skated to Luis.

“Are you okay?” he asked as he helped her up.

“Uh-huh.”

Guy practically carried Samantha over to the bench. He picked her up over the wall seperating the ice and the bench and placed her on the bench. “Stay here, alright.  We’ll be back.”

“Okay.”She whispered.

“So, what do we do now?”Luis asked.

“I’m gonna go to the locker room and change.” Connie said.

“Yea, me too.” Charlie said and skated toward a wall to help him find the door. The rest of the hockey players followed, including Varsity.

4 hours later…

The Ducks and Varsity had gotten changed and had made their way to the snack bar for food, the were all very hungry.

“So, Goldberg, you still hungry?” Adam asked as he finished his candy bar.

“Um, maybe. Rick, pass the nachos.”

“Sure.”

It was amazing, both teams were getting along. There was some bickering at first but then it simmered down.

“Connie…can I talk to you?” Guy whispered into Connie’s ear.

“Sure.” Connie shrugged.

“Alone.”

“Oh, sure.”Connie said and started to walk toward the locker room door, Guy followed. “So, what do you want to talk about.”

“Well, er, its halfway through the year and I miss you.” Guy mumbled. “And I was wondering if uh…maybe you would go back out with me?” Guy looked at the floor.

“Oh, Guy, I don’t know.”

“Please Connie. It’s torture without you. And I’ve seen how much I cared for you, especially that night when you helped me get Samantha back. And I think the only reason why I blamed her was ‘cause I missed you so much.”

“Guy…”

“Please say yes, Connie.”

“Guy!”

“Huh?”

“I’d love to go back out with you.” Connie smiled.

“Really?!”

“Yes, is that so hard to believe?”

“No. So, uh, do you want to go tell the others?”

“Under one condition.”

“What is it?! I’ll do anything.” Guy looked nervous.

“Hold my hand?” Connie smiled.

Guy let out a sigh of relief. “Of coarse.” He smiled and took her hand.

“I missed you, Guy.” Connie whispered.

“I missed you, too.”

“Do you think Samantha will be happy for us?”

“Of coarse…shit.”

“What?”

“I sort of forgot her after we left the rink to change.” Guy gave Connie an ‘uh-oh’ look.

“Aw. Lets go get her…how long has it been.”

“Like 4 hours.” Guy shrugged as they made their way to the rink.

After about 5 minutes they made it to the rink.

“Wow, its cold in here.” Connie points out.

If they didn’t just get back together, Guy might answer something like ‘Well, Connie, it is a hockey rink, with you know, ice.’ But instead he answered, “Yea, a little. Here, take my jacket.” Guy said as he started to put his jacket around her.

“No, that’s okay. I have my own. Maybe you should give it to Samantha.” Connie said as they started walking on the floor next to the bleachers.

“I guess you’re right.” Guy said.

The finally got to the bench. Samantha was curled up into a little ball.

“Hey.” Guy said making Samantha jump and fall off the bench. “Sorry!”he said as he helped her back up and wrapped his jacket around her. “You cold?”

Samantha just nodded. If she had the energy, and the nerve, she would say, ‘What do you think? I’ve been in a fuckin’ ice rink that’s like below zero.’ But she wasn’t like that, so she just thought it and her shivering started to slow down as Guy pulled her toward him.

“Sorry I forgot about you.”

Samantha didn’t realize that he forgot her. She went numb soon after he left her to change and she layed down and just stared at the wall not really sure what time it was. Then Guy came. “Its okay.” She mumbled and then noticed Connie and Guy were holding hands…should she say something?

Guy noticed her staring at his hand that was holding Connie’s. “We got back together.”Guy smiled at Connie.

Samantha smiled. “Congrats. Where’s everyone else?”

“By the snack bar, eating.” Connie informed.

“Oh.” Samantha said as she leaned into Guy a little more for both support and warmth.

“Are you still cold?” Guy asked.

“Mm-hmm.”

“Well when we get to the snack bar we could look for something warm, maybe they have hot chocolate or something.” Connie smiled.

“Okay.” Samantha said softly.

When they got back to the rest of the group Adam had already made hot chocolate, which wasn’t the greatest thing, considering most of them were already on a sugar high.

Samantha had ended up not getting any hot chocolate at all, by the time Adam had finished making hers she had fallen asleep, leaning on Guy’s arm. So, Guy and Connie shared it instead. No one had noticed the new closeness between Guy and Connie so they took it upon themselves to say something.

“Um, you guys?” Connie said getting everyone’s attention.

“Yea?” Charlie asked.

“Um, me and Connie got back together.” Guy smiled.

“Congratulations!” Charlie said, quite loudly, waking Samantha up.

“Huh?” She asked sleepily.

“Nothin’, go back to sleep.” Guy whispered and gave a quick glare at Charlie but then smiled.

“We should all go to sleep.” Riley said.

“Yea, he’s right.” Charlie, the other captain, agreed.

“So, do we just sleep here?” Adam asked.

“Sure, I guess.” Riley shrugged.

“So, are we all getting along?” Julie asked starting to lean against Scooter.

“Yea, you guys aren’t too bad.” Cole smiled.

“Night guys.” Goldberg mumbled.

“Night.”
