PREVENTION
Diabetes Type II can be prevented if steps are taken early on in an individual's life--prior to development of symptoms.
Exercise and proper diet are the two best preventive measures.
Staying Physically Active
In patients with type 2 diabetes, exercise can clearly play a beneficial role, by improving lipids, blood pressure, cardiovascular fitness, and quality of life.
Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the United States[2] shows the importance of the lack of
physical exercise and the consequent increase in obesity. Between one quarter and one third of the US adult population in the gets little or no physical exercise. Population
studies show a clear association between physical activity and the development of diabetes.
Eating Right
Strive for a diet that is low in fat and rich in high-fiber foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes(dried beans and peas).
Avoid eating too many carbohydrates immediately before or after meals. Watch saturated fat and cholesterol intake. A healthy diet will
prevent obesity and keep the body's production of insulin normal. Futhermore, a healthy diet will reduce the likely hood of cells developing
resistence to insulin.
Although exercise and healthy eating individually can reduce the risk of developing diabetes, the beneficial effects can be maximise by coordinating
a healthy diet with an exercise program.
