Day 12
Day 11
We were headed to our final hotel in Kusadashi.  Along the way, we visited the ancient site of Aphrodisias.  Excavations in the theater hill have revealed layers of settlement dating back to the Bronze Age (c.2800-2200 BC)!  The city of Aphrodisias was founded in the 5 C BC.  It became an artistic center with a famous school of sculpture.
The Theater was built in the late Hellenistic period and later restored in the 1 C BC.  It was dedicated to the goddess of love, Aphrodite.
The Tetrapylon was a monumental gateway which was probably built in the 2C AD during the reign of Hadrian.  It had 4 rows of 4 columns.
The Temple of Aphrodite was began in the first century BC.  Around 500 AD, it was converted into a Christian church, which was a monumental task.  It remained in use until the Seljuk conquered the area in about 12C AD.
We were treated to a nice group lunch at a restaurant.  Sidar wanted to stop at an elementary school which the restaurant owners son also attended.  He delivered photos of children taken by precious travelers, and we were encouraged to take more pictures of the students.  Jerry and I took many pictures and mailed them to Sidar shortly after we returned home.  Im sure hell be delivering those as he visits the school again with future tourists.  Children were not in school uniform, because they were out of the regular session.  They were so friendly and beautiful.
