Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่)

Geography
Chiang Mai is in the north of Thailand, about 19?N, 99?E, 720 km from Bangkok, 310 m (1,027 ft) above sea level. The area is 20,107 sq km, 82.74% is mountain. The temperature is during 12.5 - 38.0?C (2003).

The population is 1,603,220, only the city 248,340 (2003).

History
The people have lived here since prehistoric era. Chiang Mai city was the capital of Lanna kingdom, founded by King Mangrai in 1296. The Burmese ruled 1558 - 1774. It became the Siam colony from 1774 - 1899, was deposed from the country to a region of Siam in 1899, at last only province in 1933.

Three Kings Monument
By Chiang Mai City Legend, King Mangrai of Chiang Mai and his friend King Ruang of Sukhothai and King Ngam Mueang of Phayao were talking how to build Chiang Mai city. This monument is at the center of the city.

The city is the plain in the valley. Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is on the west, and Ping River on the east.

The main city is square, about 2 km width for each side, around with the moat.
