Rune Awareness



Place the 24 Elder Futhark runes faceup, in front 
of you, in the form of rune stones, squares, or cards. 
Arrange the runes by aett, grouping them in 
three sets of eight, yet spacing them out so you can 
look at each one individually. Sit or stand comfortably. 
Clear your mind, letting go of distracting thoughts. 
Take a few deep breaths, inhaling to the count of six 
and exhaling to the count of six, and begin looking at 
the runes, one at a time, making a mental note of how your 
mind and perception move as you see the various runes in 
front of you. Allow your awareness to drift slowly from 
symbol to symbol, focusing for a few moments on each one. 
Be particularly aware of your intellectual process and how 
it works in relation to the symbols you are studying. What 
does your mind do? Do you dissect the symbols, one by one, 
analyzing their essential elements? Do certain runes evoke 
sensations or memories, and do these then connect to other 
sensations and memories? Think about how each runic symbol 
relates to your present life, noticing how some seem to 
resonate with you more than others. As you focus on each 
symbol, chant the name of the rune over and over. Notice 
what effect this has on your perception, and any related 
body sensations. Take at least fifteen minutes to do this 
meditation. When you finish, select one rune to work with for 
the day and put the remainder away in your rune bag or box.
