The Rune Cloth

You need to keep your runes clean.
This is best done by wrapping them in a rune
cloth before placing them in their pouch or box.
The rune cloth, customarily a 9-inch (22.5 cm)
square white cloth, protects the runes, and also
forms a surface boundary for runecasting. The size
represents the Nine Worlds of Yggdrasil. The side
of the cloth you place the runes upon needs to be
white or ivory. The opposite side of the cloth can
be of any pattern and color.
Using a natural material such as linen, silk, cotton,
or hemp, you can leave your rune cloth as it is, or
draw, paint, and embroider runic symbols on the back of
it. You may feel a few specific runes are appropriate.
For example, you could inscribe Ingwaz in the middle of
your rune cloth to symbolize a doorway. Frequently, all
24 runes of the Elder Futhark are drawn in a circle around
the edge of the cloth. Other symbols such as astrological
signs and the four directions-North, East, South, and
West-may also be used on runecasting cloths.
You can even make your own rune cloth into a pouch to
hold your runes. For example, using a 9" square cloth,
sew thick ribbon or cord on each of the four corners.
When you're not using the cloth, put your runes in the
middle of it and gather together and pull up the ribbons
on the four ends. Wind the ribbons around the top of the
bulk of the runes so as to form a bag. Tie the ends together
in a bow, so that you can easily untie the bag when you
want to use your runes.
However decorated, your rune-reading cloth covers the
surface in front of you. Then you place the runes upon
the cloth in the specific layout of your choosing. The
rune cloth offers a focal point, from which you move
into divine Oneness, an energy that contains no
boundaries or separations. the only boundaries exist
in our own minds as we dissect things and move them
onto their "proper" categories.
