Intro:
Sonic the Fighters was developed by AM2, who created such games as Virtua Fighter and Shenmue. Many Sega high-ups didn't like the concept of Sonic and co. beating each other up, but it was released, in very small numbers, as Sonic Championship in North America.

Story:
Dr. Eggman plans on taking over the world with his new Death Egg II! Creating several Eggman robots, he plans on taking over the world far out of reach in space. Tails catches wind of this with one of his surveillance robots, so creates the Lunar Fox, a one-seater spaceship. The only downside is that it takes eight Chaos Emeralds (don't ask) to power it! The owners of the eight Emeralds each want to go, so a tournament is held to determine who is the strongest!

The Game:
Sonic the Fighters has quite a simple set up, with three buttons for punch, kick and guard. Guard works with shields - if you block and get hit, shields are worn away. Block too much, and you'll have no shields, and no way of guarding, left.

Each of the eight characters each has their own style. Playing through the game, you'll face each of them, including a copy of the character you're playing as, before going on to the Death Egg II. There, you will face Metal Sonic. Metal Sonic is akin to Dural in the Virtua Fighter series - He can use moves from any character, and is stronger to boot. Beat him, and you'll go on to fight Eggman.
