Sonic has appeared in many comics since his conception. Around the time Sonic the Hedgehog came out, two promotional comics by Fancis Mao were published. Instead of using the plot the Japanese version of the games had, the stories created a backstory where Sonic met a kindly scientist named Kintobor who was turned into the evil Dr. Robotnik in an accident involving the Chaos Emeralds. In 1993, a mini-series simply called Sonic the Hedgehog was published by Archie comics in the US. A fully fledged comic series grew from this, which also had a Knuckles spin-off. Later that year, Egmont Fleetway published the first issue of Sonic the Comic. The UK series used a variation of the Francis Mao backstory and ran for 223 issues. The comic also had breif runs in Germany, France and Belgium. Sometime during 1994, a short French series called Sonic Adventures was also published, published by La Sirčne. It featured Sonic (naturally), Tails, Amy Rose and Robotnik (using the Americanised design) and seemed to closer follow the game series' stories compared to the English comics. While it did not feature everyone's favourite gullable red echidna Knuckles, it did have a female echidna named Alucion. In 2001, a Sonic manga by Corocoro also had a short run in Japan. Special thanks to Adamis for the information on Sonic Adventures. |
