Do you know your Badniks from your Chao? Does the whole concept of speedy blue hedgehogs and two tailed foxes make no sense to you? Then you've come to the right place. He's an introduction to the world of Sonic...

Firstly, that blue fellow you've seen a lot of here would be Sonic. I'm guessing you know that much. Sonic is a hedgehog - granted, a three foot blue hedgehog, but that's how he is. With his chums, he speeds around the world at the speed of sound (as his name suggests) saving everyone from the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik.

The most confusing thing about Sonic is that there are many alternate storylines that all contradict each other. The best way to understand them all is to take it for granted that they do not necessarily have anything to do with any other storyline from other continuities. Each series has their own plots and characters, so trying to link them all together is just a way of getting a bad headache. Here are all the main Sonic continuities:

The games:

Dubbed by many fans as 'SegaSonic'. The games were the first incarnation of Sonic, and are still going strong today. Sonic, his sidekick Tails and a whole host of other characters spend their time fighting Dr. Robotnik and his Badnik army, who are a group of robots made by the doc. Badniks are powered by small animals trapped inside their metal shells, using them as batteries. Sonic and co. need to smash the 'bots to rescue the animals.

Sonic the Comic:

Sonic the Comic, (Sometimes known as Fleetway, named after the publishers) was a comic book telling the story of Sonic and his freedom fighter friends' fight against the maniacal Dr. Ivo Robotnik on the distant planet Mobius. Originally a kindly old Dr. by the name of Ovi Kintobor, the doc met with a young brown hedgehog who went by the name of Sonic, so called due to his impressive speed. Sonic and the doc became friends, and Kintobor trained Sonic up in a huge treadmill to boost up his speed (purely for scientific reasons, of course). Eventually, Sonic broke the sound barrier, and the resulting sonic boom turned Sonic into his blue form that we're all more familiar with.

While researching the mysterious Chaos Emeralds, the doc found that he could place all the evil on Mobius into them. Using the ROCC (Retro Orbital Chaos Compressor), the Doc started to remove all traces of evil around him using the six Chaos Emeralds he had found. Unfortunately, lacking the elusive seventh grey emerald, they were unstable. Sonic, watching at the time, pointed out that they hadn't eaten for ages, so Kintobor went to see what was in the fridge. Only a solitary, rotten egg remained. Kintobor, whilst absent-mindedly musing over what to make with it, tripped over a loose wire, hitting the ROCC.

The explosion resulted in the evil flowing into the unfortunate Ovi Kintobor, creating Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Escaping the lab, Sonic vowed to defeat the evil Robotnik.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog:

AoStH for short. This was the first Sonic cartoon, which saw Sonic the super speedy hedgehog and his little buddy Tails foiling the plans of the evil Robotnik, and his henchmen Coconuts, Scratch and Grounder. A light-hearted and slapstick cartoon, AoStH never took itself too seriously.

Sonic the Hedgehog the cartoon series:

Sonic the Hedgehog, (Sometimes called SatAM, being Saturday AM, the time it was shown) is one of the most radically different Sonic continuities there is. The evil warlord Julian Ivo Robotnik rules over Mobius with an iron fist, capturing its innocent citizens and 'roboticizing' them - Turning them into mindless robots. Sonic, Princess Sally and the rest of the freedom fighters valiantly oppose him in their hidden base of Knothole.

Sonic the Hedgehog the comic series:

Sonic the Hedgehog (known as Archie due to its publishers), expands on the plot as SatAM. Sonic and his group engage the evil Robotnik, attempting to free Mobius once and for all! There was also a series that focused on the echidna in red (or green... don't ask), Knuckles.

Sonic Underground:

SU for short. Sonic and his twin siblings Sonia and Manic tour Mobius cheering up the oppressed citizens with their rather... unique style of music. Sonic, Sonia and Manic search for their missing mother, later with the help of Knuckles. Can they overthrow the evil dictator Robotnik?

Sonic the Hedgehog The Movie:

Sometimes called the 'Sonic Anime', 'Sonic OAV' or 'Sonic OVA'. Dr. Robotnik has come to the land of the sky - Of all things asking for help! Sonic, Tails and Knuckles become embroiled in a plot involving Robotnik and latest most deadly creation - Hyper Metal Sonic! But how can Sonic defeat himself? There can only be one Sonic!

Sonic X:

Produced by TMS, Sonic X is a 52 part anime series. It was dubbed in English by 4Kids Entertainment. Sonic and co. are warped into our own world by an accident involving Chaos Control, where they meet up with the lonely Chris Thorndyke. Dr. Eggman is also around to try and take over the planet. The series has adaptations of the Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Battle games, and also has a cameo appearance of fan favourites the Chaotix.
