In January 1996, a cartoon simply titled "Sonic the Hedgehog" was released on video in Japan in two parts, roughly translated as "Journey to Eggmanland" and "Sonic vs. Metal Sonic". The cartoon was produced by General Entertainment Co., Ltd. and supervised by Naoto Oshima and Yuji Naka, the original creators of Sonic. The first time it appeared outside of Japan with the release of Sonic Jam, which included a short video of the cartoon in the museum section. The cartoon was translated into English and released on video and DVD in the US in September 1999 by ADV films compiled into one, under the title "Sonic the Hedgehog: the Movie", and later found its way elsewhere under the same release.
