Sonic Cartoons

Sonic mocks such foolish conventions as seats in planes

Sonic the Hedgehog has to date appered on five seperate cartoons, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Underground, Sonic the Movie and Sonic X. Each of these cartoons follow their own storylines and continuities, and don't have much bearing on any other.

The first cartoons produced were Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog. These were produced by a companty called DiC, and featured Americanised versions of Sonic, Tails and Eggman (or rather Robotnik). Other characters were created for the cartoons. AoStH was a more slapstick affair that was, in its own way, fairly faithful to the games, in the colourful, carefree principle at least. Sonic the Hedgehog was 'darker', and featured a large cast based on the original animal friends from the games. Sonic Underground was a French-produced cartoon that took even more liberties with the original game's stories than Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic the Movie is a consolidated version of the two-part Sonic cartoon called Sonic the Hedgehog (not the previously mentioned Sonic the Hedgehog, that is - confused yet?) that appeared in Japan. Sonic X is a series of 52 episodes produced by TMS, and is probably the closest to the games, character-wise.
