Intro:
At E3 2004, Nintendo unveiled the Nintendo DS - their new touch sensitive dual screened handheld. Various tech demos were available to the lucky people milling around at the show, one of which was simply titled "Sonic E3 Demo".

The Game:
Featuring a 3D Sonic in Green Hill-like circuit, the demo itself played like a time trial. The basic premise was that you rub the touch sensitive screen as quickly as you can, which in turn makes Sonic run around the course faster. As you get faster, Sonic goes through several speed levels. You start off at sub-sonic speeds, but as you break the sound barrier you go through several levels of 'Sonic speed', which start fancy slow motion and blurring effects. Whilst you run around the course as fast as you can, you also collect the obligatory rings strewn across the track. At the end of the demo, your highest speed level, time and ring count are calculated and you are given a rank on your performance. If you get the record, you get a great Engrish 'Congratulation!' message.

Sonic E3 Demo was never intended to be released to the public, and is not a game in the strictest sense. It was designed only to show what the Nintendo DS was capable of, and what Sega could do with it. Sega later announced that they would produce a Sonic title for the Nintendo DS, tentatively called Sonic DS. It was suggested that the game would relate to the demo, but the game (titled Sonic Rush) turned out very different to the demo.
