Sonic the Hedgehog CD

Sonic shakes his finger at you in a Sonic 1-esque way. It's the way it should be.

Intro:
Sonic CD was the first and only Sonic game to be released for Sega's Mega CD. Graphically, it takes a leaf out of Sonic the Hedgehog's book, but in fact came out after Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Allegedly, the two were in development at the same time, but Sonic CD took longer to develop.

Story:
A hyperactive young hedgehog by the name of Amy Rose has been infatuated with Sonic ever since he'd become famous. She'd love to chase him as best she could, even if Sonic would zoom off moments later. She also liked to read tarot cards, and these cards told her that she'd meet Sonic at Never Lake...

Indeed, the blue 'un was on his way to Never Lake. He wanted to see the legendary 'Little Planet' that appeared only once in the last month of each year. The miniature planet was said to have its own time, controlled by the (originally titled) 'Time Stones'.

When Sonic arrived at where the Little Planet should be, he saw something rather disturbing... The whole planet was covered in machinery, and chained to a mountain! There's only one scientist who would do such a thing (considering the mountain bore glasses and a moustache), Dr. Eggman!

When Amy finally caught up with Sonic, things turned for the worse. Suddenly, a blue blur grabbed Amy and took her to Eggman's base. Sonic was shocked - what on earth could go that fast, besides him? Rather confused, Sonic sped to the rescue.

Eggman was pleased... Finally, with the Time Stones, he would control time itself, and then the world! He was ready for Sonic this time, as he had a secret weapon... Metal Sonic!

The Game:

Sonic CD is well remembered for its fully animated intro and ending. It also introduced one of Sonic's main rivals, the popular Metal Sonic and Sonic's personal stalker, Amy Rose.

The game plays in the same way as Sonic the Hedgehog with three acts per zone with a boss battle on the third. However, this time you can go forward or backwards in time within the levels by running past the 'future' and 'past' signposts. Once you've done this, you must run as fast as possible for a certain amount of time. If you manage it without stopping, you'll be warped to the past or future. This changes the layout of the level somewhat, as well as allowing you to change the zone's 'future'.

In the past of acts one and two, there are two hidden items. Firstly, there's a sort of Metal Sonic projector. Destroying this, all of the resident animals are freed. Next up is a robot transporter. Destroying these stops all the robots from being transported into the past, and so removes them all from the future. If you go back to the future (hey, I had to say it at some point) once you've done this, you get a 'good future', where Eggman's evil machinery isn't about.

Instead of Chaos Emeralds, in this game you collect 'Time Stones'. You access their special stages in the same way as you do in Sonic the Hedgehog, by collecting 50 rings and jumping through a big ring at the end of the level. Collecting all six Time Stones gives you a good future for all levels, as well as showing you the 'good' ending at the end of the game.
