The quintessential suspension configuration. It's used by Formula 1 cars and exotic sport cars such as Ferrari and Lamborghini; but it was also the first independent front suspension type, and was introduced as such in the early 30's. Many humble cars have had this configuration for their front suspensions. The short-long arm suspension (SLA) is also named double wishbone. The main advantage of the SLA suspension is that it provides excellent kinematics and geometry. It can also be designed to be very robust. The disadvantages of the SLA suspension is that it takes up more space than other suspension systems such as MacPherson struts. This is especially critical in small to medium front-wheel drive cars for front and rear axle applications alike. The SLA suspension is also more expensive and complex, both to manufacture and to assemble. |
