This is the most common front suspension configuration for modern cars. It is compact and has relatively few components. These characteristics make the MacPherson strut suitable for small to medium size cars, especially front-wheel drive, where under-hood space is always at a premium. A properly designed MacPherson strut front suspension can provide excelent handling dynamics and harshness control. The disadvantages of this configuration are that it provides less freedom for selecting kinematic and geometric suspension characteristics. Additionally, the strut towers have to be designed to withstand high loads and they can also be a path for NVH into the passenger compartment. |
