A popular suspension configuration, the MacPherson strut rear suspension provides the same benefits discussed in the previous section. An additional advantage is that in typical rear axle MacPherson strut applications the suspension loads are distributed among three links plus the strut, per side. This provides the ability to tune each individual suspension link bushing for a specific purpose. For example, the bushings on the longitudinal link can be very soft to provide wheel recession, that is, rearward motion of the wheel as it hits a bump. Similarly, the lateral link bushings can be tuned for optimal rear wheel passive steering. Finally, each link except the strut is subjected to tension and compression loads only. The main disadvantages of this configuration are a lack of anti-lift capability and increased suspension noise transmitted through the strut towers. |
