1997-98 Annual Report
Introduction
After struggling to compete in the Senior competition for the
past four seasons, the club finally made their mark on the field
this past season. The highlight of the season was the emphatic
victory over Wairau in the 1-day final, the clubs first senior
competition win of any sort in it's 90 year history. After
tasting victory for the first time in the final 2-day match of
the season, the senior team have not been beaten since, nor has
any team scored over 150 runs against them since. Much of the
credit for the improved fortunes of the club lays with the
appointment of Dave Win as coach. This is another area where the
club has led the way in Marlborough cricket, with coaching at
club level being largely forgotten over recent years.
The number of players at the club continues to grow with an
additional 3 teams at the club last season making the total
number of teams now 14, that's over 150 playing members. Many of
the junior players from past seasons are now approaching the age
where they will be looking to push their way into the senior side
in the next season or two.
Once again a number of our players enjoyed success at higher
levels the highlights being Carl Bulfin, again in the Central
Districts Shell Series side and also being a key member of the
New Zealand Black Max team in their inaugural series against
England, and Jarrod Englefield who was captain of the New Zealand
Youth team which made the final of the Youth World Cup in South
Africa and who was invited to be a part of the New Zealand
Cricket Academy over the winter.
