THE CLOSURE We don’t get a lot of snow but this photo shows South Crofty after a small fall. Protesters outside the Main Gate of the mine. It was not unusual for those left removing equipment from underground to be confronted by these people and the media. St Piran’s Flag is prominent in this photo of the supporters outside the Main Gate. Some of the plackards left around for the Management to see. One of the signs that was outside of South Crofty Mine on the last days before final closure. Mrs Hinton, who was the secretary to the Manager, was given the task of taking a management statement to the Media. They were to busy deciding to shut the mine down. She always had a smile for whoever called into the office, whether the person was in a suit or covered in grime. A group of Crofty’s personnel waiting for the cage to take them to the surface. Notice the smiles. You wouldn’t think it was almost Closure. All the Media was there when the Mine closed. Everyone from national TV and Radio including Radio Cornwall. It wasn’t very long before this scene that “Blue Peter” visited the mine. We are still looking for our “Blue Peter Badges!” The hosing down of the miners was a traditional thing, especially if it was a person’s birthday or someone was leaving the employ.‘Give ‘em a shower’. The media liked this but they weren’t on the receiving end of the hose. A view of Robinson’s Winder with Carn Brea in the distance.
