In honour of PC’s impending 4th anniversary,
I’ve decided to take a stroll down memory lane in this week’s column,
and reminisce about some of what I consider to be the highlights of the
past four years.
The premiere episode: I’ll never forget our
beloved Audrey being shot by Greg Cooper, and almost as freaky was the
makeshift operation Joe performed with a power drill---desperate time call
for desperate measures, and Joe always was one to rise to the occasion!
Also outstanding was Karen’s striptease which managed to divert Cooper’s
attention at a crucial moment, and Chris and Eve’s major ‘tudes. Although
Chris has stayed pretty much true to form over the years, my oh my, hasn’t
our little Eve changed! From a vixen in training to a heroine in four short
years---pretty impressive!
Also impressive is the way in which Joe has
always come through over the years; from day one, he’s been a real hero,
saving lives and mending broken hearts along the way, which is why I think
his current storyline (or lack thereof) is a real shame---give this boy
a clean bill of health, and let’s see him come to his senses and fight
Frank for Karen’s love! I’ll never buy that Joe has totally forgotten his
love for her, it was too deep, and had endured way too long for that to
happen.
Speaking of deep and abiding loves, I’ll always
remember Julie’s love for baby Christina; from the moment she gave birth
to her, Julie loved that baby with a fierce devotion made even more intense
by the fact that they were wrenched apart so quickly because of the circumstances
of Christina’s birth. And let us not forget that the little one was named
after Chris, whose knight in shining armour tendencies really came shining
through on that occasion (despite some initial concern about his car’s
upholstery[!], which only served to make his later heroics even more endearing!).
Needless to say, when Julie kidnapped Christina and went on the run, I
was on the edge of my seat , rooting for her to get away safely.
Yet another wonderful example of motherly love
and devotion was Courtney’s bedside vigil when Neil was so sick. I had
to forgive all her rotten schemes and misdemeanor’s when I saw the depth
of her love for her son, and must admit to actually missing the little
minx now that she’s been out of the picture for so long---come back,
Courtney, we miss your scheming ways!
Some of my absolute favourite memories have
to do with St. Paddy’s day at the Scanlon household. This warm-hearted
gathering of friends and family has always brightened my March, and
was made even more enjoyable by the impromptu talent fests that were
staged---good fun for everyone!
A not-so-familial moment has also stayed with
me , and that is the kinky kiss that Kevin shared with his twisted sister-in-law(that
almost was)---their relationship could definitely have put the “fun” in
dysfunctional, had only TPTB had the wisdom to pursue it!
Of course, Matt and Ellen’s romance was wonderful,
and the way in which Matt was shown as overcoming his physical limitations,
turning what could have been defeat into an unprecedented victory over
seemingly insurmountable odds, was an absolute inspiration. I can only
hope that Matt and Ellen will return to the PC canvas someday soon, bringing
their own special brand of magic with them.
Finally, the selfless love that Chris has always
demonstrated for Eve has been an inspiration, providing a glimpse of
what everyone secretly, in their heart of hearts, longs for---pure, unconditional
love. In Chris’s case I still have hopes that one day, it will be
reciprocated, if not by Eve, then by some other worthy recipient (Gabi,
maybe?)
Also, Scotty and Serena’s incredible father-daughter
relationship, Victor and Mary’s sweet romance, the exciting dynamics of
the hospital strike, Frank’s addiction to DL-56, and the way in which Karen,
a true friend stood by him and helped him to overcome it; and most recently,
Frank’s journey back in time (I’m hoping to have more on this in next week’s
column)---these are all moments that I will cherish, but only a few of
the many, many wonderful moments that this show has provided me with over
the past 4 years. So, here’s to PC---thanks for the memories, and may there
be many more wonderful ones in store!
