This week for our Chris and Eve column, Tona
and I decided to get together and combine our columns to talk about an
overview about PC through the years, but as I got to writing my column,
I received a phone call from my brother who'd found himself wrapped up
in a bit of a dilema. It seems he and his girlfriend went out to
dinner and he left his wallet at home. Needless to say on my way
over I was trying to think of some touching and compelling subject to speak
about to really make this edition a special one in regards to Chris and
Eve and it dawned on me, what really makes Port Charles special is the
fans. Yes a great deal of it comes from the very talented actors,
producers, cast and crew, writers, etc, but without the fans a show wouldn't
be able to have lived a life such as Port Charles has. It's had it's
highs and it's lows. It's good times and it's bads, but somehow it
always seems to have those of us who are still hanging in to see what happens
next. We watched as Chris and Eve grew from the outcasts to where
they are today. Eve went from vixen in the making to the Port Charles
heroine. Chris remained sly in his sneaky ways, but somehow in the
process he lost his heart, to Eve, the one woman he truly loved, but will
probably never have. Time after time we've watched Chris pull off
a scheme only to see him falter for his more human side, which has always
kept him a step from being a true villain. We saw as his heart emerged
with Eve and Julie and our hearts broke with him when he love had evaded
him time after time. With Eve we shared her pain as heartbreak followed
her and we've shared her joys as we think of what the future could hold.
PC may not have a high standing in the ratings, but it has no shortage
of dedicated and true fans which is why this newsletter came about.
A little background on me. When I was
younger I didn't watch too many soaps. Yes for a few years on and
off when I was elementary school, I tuned in to watch OLTL and I followed
the Megan/Max/Gabrielle triangle or my own personal favorite at the time
when I was younger AMC's Hayley and Brian turbulant teen romance.
I remember loving to have a day off so I could watch Hayley and Brian as
Hayley was a character with spunk and zest, a fun daytime character.
I had even taken a great liking to the Kevin/Lucy love story on GH, but
as time went on it faded with me. Soaps were one of those things
that could come and go with me as the times went on I tended away from
them. It wasn't until my freshman year of college when I really tapped
into the soap world again. My roommate was an AVID DOOL fan and while
I myself, had other things that I tended to during the day, I found myself
amazed that she scheduled her classes around this one show. Being
the psychology major that I am, I sat there watching in blind curiosity
as she was absorbed in this show. I'd asked her about it time and
time again, but really didn't get it until one day I was taking a nap when
the sounds of crying flooded my room. I took a moment away from my
nap to find my roommate in tears and I asked her what had happened.
She explained that her favorite character Lisa Rinna's Billie Reed had
left the show and it was as if she'd lost a friend. She later began
to tell me this tale of the character's story and how she'd been sucked
in and soon I was experiencing her 'soap world' first hand.
Now being ever the curious one, I couldn't
help but wonder about this feeling associated with a soap opera.
When I had been younger as I mentioned I'd tuned into soaps, but it was
kind of like Barbie dolls were to me, a phase that I outgrew...or so I
thought. None the less I started to watch DOOL with her in the hopes
of perhaps gaining an insight into what it was that made soaps so addictive
as in our dorms at MSU, there wasn't a room that didn't have the soap on.
My curiosity got the best of me when I go down a hall in the brother or
sister floor and find DOOL on. My curious nature got the best of
me and thus began my introduction to soaps.
My Port Charles experience began one night
when I was home with the flu. The night I'd intended on going out
with a group of friends turned into a time that changed history so to speak.
At the time I'd been watching DOOL (thanks to my roommate's influence)
and when the PC premere came on, I tuned in because I had enjoyed watching
Kevin and Lucy when I was in high school if I was around. Instantly
on that first night when I noted the return of Scotty, Kevin and Lucy and
the prospect of Lucy being pregnant, I was estatic, not to mention my excitement
over Karen returning and all the handsome newbies. Instantly I was
hooked when the interns were held hostage by Greg Cooper and as time went
on PC just seemed to be on when I took my lunch hour. I found myself
absorbed in it and enjoying this new little show that I'd happened to encounter
by chance.
Obviously a lot has happened since then as
I sit here pondering my Chris and Eve column trying to think up something
that you as fans could appreciate, but instead I've come up with the notion
that I'd like to hear your thoughts. I realize people say that a
lot and you hear it every so often, but I truly would like to hear what
it was that got you hooked on PC. I'm quite curious to see what it
was for you that carried your interest. Please send your thoughts
to me at [email protected] as I'd love to hear from you. I realize
that this column is supposed to be about Chris and Eve and I'll include
some things below, but for now, I thought I'd take in your thoughts kind
cheerleaders as you too are an integral part of this newsletter.
Outcasts:
The Beginnings Of Chris and
Eve
From the beginning of Port Charles it was obvious
that Dr. Chris Ramsey and Dr. Eve Lambert weren't looking to make any pals.
Both had agendas and goals...primarily looking out for number one and in
doing so, these two cynics crossed paths. Chris was out for one thing:
making sure he was a step ahead of the rest. Wanting wealth, power
and status, Chris wasn't looking to find any pals in Port Charles.
Eve, on the other hand, was determined to overlook her past and move forward
to get the life she'd missed out on growing up poor as a child. Both
these two had an agenda and it was in being the outcasts in Port Charles
that they became friends. Instantly the attraction was evident with
these two and as in everything they'd encountered distrust had run high.
Knowing that Chris had a file on her past provided by Greg Cooper's arrest
during the beginning of their internship, Eve broke into his apartment
in the hopes of stealing it, but instead she was caught and Chris tried
to blackmail her into helping him win the heart of Julie Morris (Devlin)
as he was interested in getting a piece of her...bank account that was.
Somehow over time these two became pals none the less. When Julie
found out about her father's affair with Eve, Chris offered Eve a place
to stay by letting her sleep on the couch at his apartment. Over
the brief time they shared together in his apartment, Chris found himself
increasingly attracted to Eve as they shared stolen kisses and a great
many martinis. Eve too felt an instant attraction to Chris and when
she'd moved out it was that attraction that convinced her that moving out
was the right thing. Over time the two remained friends while Chris
did what he could to eliminate the competetion in winning the prestigous
Quartermaine residency. He pulled out all the stops in an attempt
to one up the competetion namely Dr. Matt Harmon when Chris went to great
lengths to catch Matt and superior Dr. Ellen Burgess together in a compromising
position thus ensuring him the Quartermaine Residency. During this
time however the General Homicide murders began and Chris and Eve both
stuck together as they had no real alibis for the time in which Bennett
Devlin was murdered. The two grew close covering for one another
and over the years they developed a friendship becoming best friends.
Chris nursed Eve's wounds a great many times when the men in her life tossed
her aside and together they found a bond unlike anything they'd ever known
before. Chris was Eve's rock during the good times and bad and he
went to great lengths to help her. Secretly falling in love with
Eve, Chris risked his life trying to help her when Cooper and Julie kidnapped
her, he was at her side when she was taken in for surgery and he pleaded
for her to just believe in him when Courtney and Frank tried to break up
their friendship. Time and time again Eve has been blind to Chris'
feelings for her, but long time viewers believe that they are still there.
Perhaps one day Eve will see what she had in front of her and when she
does, will Chris still be waiting for her? Some fans would like to
think so.
