Owning a Car.

Owning a car is a necessity in USA, unless you are in places like New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago or Boston which are well connected by subway. Even then, you would need a car quite soon because subway would limit you to central points in the city. For the majority of people who are not in places like these, car is one of the first things that you would need to get. If you are on an International Driving Permit, you are permitted to drive on a limited period of time. Eventually you do need your driving license and the sooner you get it, the sooner can you consider yourself taking a big step towards getting all set.

Written Driving Test

The driving test typically consists of two parts - a written test and a road test. The written test consists of simple objective questions on computer. It is quite easy and the Department of Motor Vehicles gives you a Driver Handbook to study. The Driver Handbook might vary slightly from state to state. Though basic driving rules do not change but posted speed limits and rules can definitely vary. Once you go through this Handbook, the written test is quite easy. You need to spend about an hour or less with the test, depending on how quickly you could browse through the questions. Pass or fail is indicated instantly, if you pass you get a Learners Permit, which means you can drive with a qualified driver beside you. Ask motor school in your area for most frequently asked questions. Carry your photo ID, address proof in USA, credit card, and social security card for getting eligibility for written driving test.

Road Test

For road test, some states needs to schedule one, if you want to avoid wait times. The instructor asks you to drive around for anywhere between 20-45 minutes. Again, how easy or tough this test is varies from state to state & person to person. Wisconsin road tests typically last for 45 minutes and you are mostly asked to do 'Y turns', 'U turns', parallel parking in a busy road, uphill parking, downhill parking etc.

Driving Permit

If you pass the road test, you would be issued your driving license after you pay the application fee. You need to produce your photo ID for verification, carry your passport & social security card alongwith you. You also need to give a vision test. If your vision does not meet DMV's standard, you will be asked to visit your eye doctor and have a thorough examination completed. You will be given a vision examination form for your eye doctor to complete telling DMV about your vision. You must then return the form to DMV for evaluation. If you are through with your road test and vision screening, with proper ids you would receive your driving permit immediately.
