The municipality of Bunawan is located at the southeastern side of the landlocked province of Agusan del Sur ). It lies at 8° 17’ latitude and 125° 52 and 126° 13’ longitude. It is bounded in the north by the municipality of Rosario; in the east and south by the municipalities of Trento, Sta. Josefa and Veruela; and in the west by the municipalities of Loreto and La Paz. .
Bunawan’s total area is 51,218 hectares. About 20,875 hectares (41%) of it’s land found in the western side is characterized by a slope of 8% and above. (About 40.31% of the eastern side, however is severely eroded.). Mt. Saugon on the southeastern side of Bunawan has a slope of 50% and is 441 meter above sea level.
Bunawan is composed of 10 barangays namely: Bunawan Brook, Consuelo, Imelda, Libertad, Mambalili, Nueva Era, Poblacion, San Andres, San Marcos and San Teodoro, which is the only urban barangay and the seat of Government.
