    Welcome to Bunawan Agusan del Sur, Philippines. Explore the beauty and wonders of Bunawan Agusan del Sur, the gateway to Agusan Marsh. Bunawan is composed of 10 Barangays. Five are located along the National Highway the Libertad, Bunawan Brook, San Andres, Consuelo and San Teodoro which is the seat of the municipal government. The rest of five barangays are interior and situated along the Simulao River, the Imelda, Mambalili, Poblacion, San Marcos and Nueva Era. One of the highlights is the Agusan Marsh Wild Life Sanctuary where you can see natural bonsai's,endemic wild birds or migratory birds that




came from  Japan, China, Russia and other neighbouring countries, a vast numbers of ducks to nest, Manobo peoples, lily pads, endemic trees, a killer alligators,  hyacinths and other hydrophytes' plants spread out like an enormous green quilt, and you can take amazing pictures and videos during you visit to the place.     During the pre-Spanish time until its christianization by the Spanish missionaries in the 18th century, Bunawan was a small settlement inhabited by Manobos, a tribe found all over the central and eastern portion of Mindanao.
    The term “Bunawan” came about when visitors, Spanish Missionaries asked a woman along their way the name of the place. The woman who was fixing her gold jewelry misunderstood the question thinking that the visitors would want to know what she was holding, told the visitors that is Bulawan, the local term for gold. Not contended, the missionaries asked the husband for a clarification; if indeed this is Bunawan and the husband said yes. Since then, the settlement has been known as Bunawan.
    During the Spanish regime, Bunawan has its barangay government under the stewardship of a Cabesa de Barangay. Headed then by the late Petronilo Chamen who was eventually appointed
