There is nothing that will make ADHD go away or disappear, but treatments for ADHD usually consist of medication and various types of therapy.

Medication is the most common treatment, and common stimulant medications used are Ritalin (methylphenidate), Dexedrine/Dexostrat (dextroamphetamine), and Cylert (Pemoline). Medication is a controversial treatment because of the risky side effects that may occur. Natural remedies are also used to relieve the symptoms of ADHD and though they are often less effective there are fewer possible side effects.

Various therapies and interventions are used to alleivate the negative symptoms of ADHD. The most common are behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and social skills training. Behavioral therapy is using techniques to teach the individual to control and alter their behavior so it is more acceptable, while psychotherapy is helping the ADHD affected person understand the disorder and enjoy themselves as they are. They talk with the therapist about their emotions and learn ways to control their emotions and behaviors. Lastly, social skills training aids the individual in understanding how to act socially appropriatly.

Other highly controversial and/or lesser-used treatments are:

  • vitamins
  • tinted glasses
  • chiropractic adjustment and bone re-alignment
  • allergy treatmentstreatment for yeast infection
