Crest of Hyldon

Kingdom Brimlan

Crest of Gverdon
The human kingdom of Brimlan has two provinces, Gverdon (Gweireann Drumbeg) which has main land climate and Hyldon, lying closer to sea, with sea climate.

The High King of the Kingdom is Hyldonian by Blood and his name is Leof The Pious, the alias name Pious coming from his devotion to build so many churches of Bel under his dominance. He is married with the georgeous Queen Cwenlin of Gverdonia, lady whose beauty is well-known as far as in distant Vetrandus. They have their stronghold in the Old Castle of Grand City, and this is where the court of High King is held.

Gverdon (Gweireann Drumbeg)

Gverdonians were the first men to land on the continent. Gverdonians are friendly and hospitable in nature. Easy-going and informal, they like a good jest and enjoy having fun with their friends. However when pushed they are fierce and furious fighters.

Special features: pale skin, freckles and either thick dark or curly red hair are distinguisable to them. Religion: most Gverdonians are followers of Cernunnos cult, with sacrifical ceremonies carried out by their holy men, druid priests. Few Gverdonians worship also Gaea.

Outlook: A Gverdonian male wears a brigga (long, thick woolen trousers) or a kilt, cotton long shirt and either a sheepskin coat or a warm cloak. On feet typically soft leather boots, above them furry leggings. Women wear simple long dress made of cotton, combined with some other fabrics. On feet they have sandals. Higher class female usually have a colorful gown and golden jewelry. Gverdonians trade their farming products to raw materials like gold with the mountain people (dwarves) to make beautiful necklaces and other golden adornments, which are well-known and valued all over Brimlan. Men have often long hair and beard.

Gverdonians prefer a long spear or a heavy bronze mace to sword when in duel. Armoury: round pot-shaped helmets, usually brass or bronze. Round shield made of same material and a brass breastplate or a hardened leather shielding are widely used by their soldiers. An army unit can also have few war charriots with sharp razors as both side extension to the wheels spinning axis.

On battle field many Gverdonians appear naked (excluding their weapons, shields, golden armlets and other jewelry) as to show their courage over the enemy. They use extensively warhorns and trumpets and frighten enemy with howling, singing and brandishing their spears vigorously.

Gverdonian Castles

Gverdonians build their castles in form of a large, round-shape tower-like keep, where the Hall is located on the ground floor. Floor is beaten earth or stone, and strewn with rushes and herbs. The Dais of the Ruler lies at the upper end of the Hall, away from draft and traffic. The source of warmth is an open hearth type fireplace, where smoke rises through a louver. The upper story of castle (if has) has timber floor, whichi is supported by wooden pillars or stone vaulting.

Kitchen is quite often a separate building made of timber, with a central hearth where meat can be spitted or stewed in a cauldron.

Hyldon

Hyldonians, who came to Brimlan after Gverdonians pushing, Gverdonians west, are somewhat different.

They are known for their organising skills and commitment to duty, more than humor or social skills. Some might even say that they lack a tackt. Their skin is not as pale as Gverdonians', and hair is usually brown or even blond. Both male and female are often tall and well-built, thus making excellent inhabitants in the eastern border of the kingdom, where frequent ogre and troll raids are due to happen.

Hyldinians are team players more than individuals. Hyldonian dialect is dominating one in Brimlan, and the high King of GC is Hyldonian on birth. Most of the place names in Kingdom have Hyldonian names.

Many Hyldonians worship Great Bel, who is considered as main god in kingdom of Brimlan. Priests of Bel are also civil servants of the Kingdom, taking care of census, administration, historiography, declaring marriages and so on. Other gods worshipped by Hyldonians are Gaea and Thorkell.

An average Hyldonian male wears long trousers and a long sleeved tunic girdled at the waist with leather belt. Belt also tightens the trousers. Tunics normally mid-tight to knee-high and made of woven fabrics. A short cloak or cape, made of skin or fur (usually sheepskin, although troll and bear skins are more valued). Cloth cloaks (short or knee long) are also common. Footwear: generally round-toed, flat soled and reach to the ankle or just below (sandal type too). Stitched or laced together with leather thongs. On top of the shoe some kind of leggings (for protection and to give warmth). Material is leather. Similar footgear for both sex.

Female dressing includes much jewelry (rich ones!), full length symmetric gown, sleeves varying length. Costume either girdled or belted. A knife, shears, keys, cosmetic tools etc can be hanging from the belt. On head caps and hairnets sometimes. Hair often worn long (but not uncut) sometimes loose, but often plaited.

Hyldonian war equipment: Hyldonians use straight longswords and angular shaped metal shields, or round wooden ones which have been strenghtened with iron bands. They cover their upper torso with chain mail, often armbands and have metal leggings and moccasin-type shoes. Helmet: Round helmet with a noseplate, or full facelit that leaves only holes for eyes and mouth. Hyldonian archers use an long arcbow and also spear (which can be used both in combat and as javelin). Hyldonians have good knowledge on making and breaking fortifications. They have impressive catapults and other big war machines.

Hyldonian Castles

Hyldonians tend to build their strongholds on square shape, providing large one-room structure Hall with loft ceiling on one side of the courtyard.

Hall is risen to second floor for greater security. It is aisled with rows of wooden posts or stone pillars supporting the timber roof. Dais is in the upper end of the hall and an arched fireplace built in one wall. Hyldonian architecture uses hood to collect the smoke.

Lightning is arranged by rushlight, or candles impaled on vertical spikes or iron candlestick or candlebra.

Chronology

The calendar that is widely used today, is based on the old Elven chronology from the times of Great Elven Empire. The knowledge was transferred to human by Gverdonian Druids who studied the druid lore under their Elven masters.

The chronology is based on the moon cycles. Hence a year is divided into 13 months, plus minus couple of days added in the end of year to synchronise it with the solar one. The months are: Beith, Luis, Nion, Fearn, Saille, Huath, Duir, Tinne, Coll, Muin, Gort, Ngetal and Straif.

Each month lasts about 28 days (four weeks) and a week seven days, which are Moon, Fire, Water, Wood, Gold, Earth, Sun.
