Tennesse Adventure & Myrtle Beach Bike Rally

Day 6 May 10/07

Did some riding today. We went to Deals Gap and did the Dragons Tail. 318 curves in 11 miles. One guy actually wiped out just before we got there and broke an arm and possibly a collar bone? (details sketchy).

Besides the Dragon's Tail, we did a lot of other back roads. Lots and lots of interesting, curving, sloping, narrow roads in the Smokey Mountains! Just beautiful - the roads, and the scenary! The weather was awesome too, although the temperatures in the mountains fluctuate. It can get pretty cool at some points!

After our "ride", we went to Parrot Mountain. This was what I'd been waiting for!!! The road that took us to Parrot Mountain was a very interesting road in itself! When we finally got to the foot of it, there was a sharp turn to the left, and then up up up! It was an extremely steep hill that we had to ride up (still winding and curving of course!) to get up to Parrot Mountain. The steepness rivals San Fransicos streets, just to give an idea. I held my breath a few times! Deal's Gap - eat your heart out! LOL

Once at the top, there was a big parking lot, but not one inch of it was leveled off. We were on a hill. Poor Charlie had trouble parking his bike without it rolling. He actually did not stay, just took a pic in front (with some macaws in the backdrop) to prove he was there, and then went back to camp. Oh well, his loss!

Parrot Mountain was very cool. LOTS of parrots to feed and handle and interact with, and just look at. From macaws to some little adorable yellow parrots (not sure what kind they were). There must have been 50 or more in this interactive area.

You could buy seed at 25 cents a pop (gumball type machine) and go around feeding most of them (except the ones that had a sign saying "do not feed"). The birds would eat the seed, and some of them would even step off their perch to step onto me! :o) Very cute.

Then there was the lory aviary which housed approximately 30-50 lories of different variations. They were SO cute! They were selling these tiny little cups of nectar (I think they were like $5 each which I thought was a bit much), but it sure attracted the lories! We had 10 or more lories on us at a time. I would definitely go back!

Finally, we went hunting for towels, and found some in a souvenir shop, so got some nice souvenir towels that we were both dying to use (shower) LOL.
