Reasons Exotics end up in Rescue

The following were reasons given to an organization that cares for and re-homes Rats and Mice. It should be noted that the life span of these animals is only 2-3 years.

"The kids are allergic to them."

"The doctor said they are the cause of the asthma attacks."

"The doctor said they are going to give my kids allergies."

"My husband decided he doesn't like them."

"My boyfriend said it's him or the rats."

"They are too much bother."

"The kids lost interest."

"They smell (try cleaning their cage)."

"They scared my cat."

"The rat viciously attacks anyone who gets near him, so I want you to find him a good home with lots of kids."

"They make noise all night."

"I love them dearly, they are the best pets I've ever had, but I don't want them any more."

"We are moving out of the country and don't want to put them through quarantine."

"We are moving to another state and don't want to put them through the stress."

"We are moving a couple of blocks and don't want to be bothered with them."

"My son went away to college and left them."

"We changed the decor in the house."

"The rat ate my bird."

"They keep pooping."

"It peed on me."

"They play with each other and make squeaking noises. It bothers me."

"They chewed on all the wires in my house."

"They ate my bedspread."

"The science project is over."

"The school year is over."

"I just can't tell the boys from the girls and they keep having babies (for those who don't know, boy rats are blatantly obvious)."

"They made too many babies, they don't all fit in the cage any more."

"The pet shop doesn't need any more, how much will you pay me for them?"

"Animal control said I have to get rid of at least 200 of them by tomorrow."

"The rat terrier trials are over so we don't need them any more."

"I got a rat from the pet shop and a week later she had babies."

"I got two boy mice from the pet shop...turned out one was a girl."

"They're too much work."

"The kids don't clean their cages."

"My daughter didn't get all A's on her report card."

"The kids went to camp."

"It's only a $5 pet"

"It doesn't live long enough anyways"

"I want to punish my kid by taking his/her pet away"

"It's JUST a (input name)"

"The kids want a hamster now."

"It got sick, I had to release it to the wild so it could live the rest of its days among the other animals in freedom""

And the number one reason..."We just got tired of them!"

Iguanas:
1. I didn't think it would get so big. (They get up to 6ft)
2. I didn't have the time. (need at least an hour of attention a day)
3. I don't have the room for a bigger cage. (Should have thought ahead!)
4. It's not as nice as the one I saw on TV. (they have personalities just like people, and sometimes all it takes is some work, breeding season lasts a few months-they can be VERY aggressive during this time)
5. It started getting sick, and I didn't have the money for a vet. (make sure its fed right, and housed right, this avoids most health problems, and set aside emergency money for vets)
6. I got married and am having a kid. (Iguanas can live to be 20yrs old. If you think you may have something come up in that time that you don't want an Iguana around for, don't get it)
7. I didn't realize I would have to feed it fresh veggies and fruit EVERYDAY.

Burmese Pythons:
1. It got too big. (That cute 2ft snake will grow to be a possibly aggressive 20ft snake)
2. I don't have the room for a bigger cage. (Same as Iguanas)
3. It got mean/bit me. (They do that. They have aggressive tendencies just like anything else can)
4. I'm having a kid. (Same as Iguanas)
5. It's expensive to feed. (Yes, a 20ft snake eats a lot!)
6. I'm moving. (An animal is a part of the family; no matter if it's a dog, cat, bird or snake- would you move and leave a family member behind because the house you want didn't have enough bedrooms?)

Other exotics: (Monkeys, alligators, binturong, whatever)
1. It is mean. (when you agree to care for an animal, there is no guarantee that it will be 100% how you wanted it to be)
2. It's to expensive to care for. (any animal can be, I once got a FREE Iguana that within a few days cost me about $300 in vet bills)
3. The kids (or me) lost interest. (no excuse)
4. I decided that I'd rather travel. (The animal is a part of your life, by your choice, not the animals. You must consider its health; both mental and physical in every decision you make).
