Dogs Needing Homes

A listing of Northern Breed Dogs needing homes in Ontario Canada.

Updated January 14, 2000.

A group of dogs have been seized from a person who was breeding them to be sled dogs. There were 80 dogs, which the person is no longer allowed to own, as a result of a cruelty conviction.

Now these dogs need homes, unfortunately because there are so many, and because the previous owner did not feel that sled dogs should be socialized, they are scared and nervous. They do not have a good chance of finding homes, and unfortunately many will probably be put to sleep.

These are nice dogs, and the group of people who have adopted one into their homes have nothing but good things to say about them. In a very short time all have gone from being afraid of people to actively seeking out human attention. These dogs, who have never known love before, are thriving with families to call their own.

And amazingly enough all that have gone to homes with cats are doing incredibly well with them. They also get along very well with dogs, of both genders.

These dogs look like Siberian Huskies, some of the males at the Quinte Humane Society (located in Belleville Ontario, (613) 968-4673 are among the best looking dogs I have seen, with amazing coats and colours.

These are not large dogs; in fact one of the adult males only tips the scales at 18 lbs. Most of the males at QHS are over that.

Dogs at Quinte Humane Society:

15 adult males, ranging in age from just under a year and upwards. Coat patterns are silver & white, black & white, red & white, agouti, grey & white and some absolutely gorgeous dogs whose coats I can't quite describe.

Two adult females, who have been in there longer than all the males, they are part of the group of dogs originally voluntarily turned over by the musher. One is a very quite calm grey and white; the other is a perky, talkative agouti who is getting very brave with people.

Adult females who are still nursing pups, these dogs cannot be released yet.

What do people who have adopted one of these dogs have to say?

Click this link to read Chance's story. Chance came into the shelter as a frightened shy dog. Adding to the odds against him was his overall appearance. Chance was the sole survivor of an unhealthy litter of pups, and his coat had never recovered from his puppyhood ordeal. What happened to Chance? Read the written by his savior.
