Tips and tricks for Staying Sane

I am in no way a professional dog trainer, these aren't hard and fast rules either. These are based on my dog owning experience. I wish I had known these a long time ago, but better late than never I suppose.

Buy a crate. It is NOT cruel for a dog to be crated while you are out. Coming home and yelling at them for an accident they have long since forgotten IS.

Don't leave you shoes out. They will eventually be eaten.

Don't leave food out on the counter, this is just asking for trouble.

Go to obedience school with your dog. Not only will you both learn a lot, you will have FUN.

Spay or neuter your dog at the earliest possible opportunity. There is no reason not to, a fixed dog is healthier and happier.

Two dogs together are happier than one BUT you must make sure their temperaments are compatible. For example a really good combination is a neutered male and a spayed female.

Dogs are NOT babysitters. Don't leave young children alone with a dog ever. This is for the safety of the dog as well as the safety of the child.

Do some research before you buy a dog.

 Buy a six-foot fence.

Buy sturdy water buckets, dogs love to chew on water bowls.

Feed decent food. It makes cleaning up stool a lot easier.

Learn to laugh. When Earl ate the sofa Mom didn't yell at him, she went and got her camera and took his picture. In time you too will remember fondly the time little Fluffy ripped apart all the pillows.

Don't leave light objects out; most dogs love to hide your personal possessions.

Dogs shed. Some dogs shed a little, some dogs shed a lot. Be prepared for fur. Be prepared for fur in your food. Be prepared for fur on your clothes.

If dogs don't get enough exercise they get bored. Dogs that are bored destroy things. Not out of spite, but because they need something to do.

Don't ever let your dog eat more than a couple of peanuts. "Eww" is all I have to say about that.

All dogs make noise. Not necessarily when you want them to.

Remember that nobody loves you more than your dog does. No matter who you are, no matter what you do. Try to be the person that your dog thinks you are.
