"Ask the Trainer": Training Qs & As
By: Lynn Pet and Lisa Hughes, Trainer

Dear Trainer

My horse has a problem standing still when I mount.  What do I do?

Sally

Dear Sally,

First of all, check your tack.  If your saddle does not fit properly, your horse will be very uncomfortable when you mount. After ensuring that there are no problems with your tack, lead your horse to the mounting block -  Have your horse stand still for a minute, then lead him away.

Repeat this process, each time getting on your horse a little more, and then dismounting.  If you encounter any difficulty in this exercise, have someone hold your horse when you mount and dismount.  As always, be sure to use a mounting block when doing this to reduce strain on the horse's back.
