There is no substitute.

After browsing some catalogs, I found out that painted center caps for Porsches are ridiculously expensive.

They range in price from about $40 to $90 apiece!!

After doing some research on the Pelican Parts and Rennlist forums, I saw that several individuals chose to hand paint the caps themselves. One great suggestion was to use paint markers, which are available at most craft stores, or at Wal-Mart. I bought gold, black and red ones at Wal-Mart for about $2.60 apiece. When I first removed the caps, and looked closely, they were in need of being refinished. I chose to first refinish them with silver wheel paint, which I also bought at Wal-Mart for about $4.00 for one spray can.

Naturally, I first cleaned the caps by scrubbing them lightly with an old toothbrush and some cleaner. I then let them dry, and then put three light coats of silver paint on them.

I then started with the gold paint marker, and painted the entire background areas of the crest. After letting the gold paint to dry, I then proceeded with the black marker. Finally, I added the red paint.

Overall, the painting process went very smoothly and very easily. It is not all that difficult or time-consuming. I highly recommend using the paint markers. I would estimate the total time to be about two hours or less. To me, it was time well spent.

This picture shows the caps after I painted them with silver wheel paint.

At this stage, I have not yet put on a clearcoat.

I've heard that in order to be totally Porsche-anal, the bottom of the crest should point towards the valve stem!!

Note that the silver on the caps does not match the wheel perfectly... at certain angles in sunlight.
I may someday try to get matching silver and touch them up, just to be "perfect"!!
Or... I may paint the spokes and the center caps black (but keep the crest as it is)!!
